Chapter Six: The Line They Crossed The music, the lights, the heat—it was all a blur. Rachel didn’t remember exactly how they left the club. One moment she was on the dance floor, her body swaying inches away from Nathaniel’s, their eyes locked like magnets. The next, she was stumbling through the hallway of a sleek hotel, guided by a strong, familiar hand. Her head was spinning, a mix of alcohol and adrenaline, but his presence grounded her. Or maybe it pushed her further into chaos. The door clicked behind them. The room was dim, lit only by the faint glow of the city through the floor-to-ceiling windows. She turned, breathless, her body electric. And then his lips were on hers. Hard, hungry, unrelenting. She gasped into the kiss, hands flying to his chest, gripping the fine fabric of his dress shirt. His arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them. She wasn’t sure what she was doing—wasn’t sure she even cared. This is wrong, a voice in her head whispered. This is your boss but she was too drunk to even contradict her own decisions. Her body is moving on its own, swaying with this heat, with this hunger she's feeling. But louder, bolder, was another voice—the one that had been caged since she got to New York. The one tired of rules, of heartbreak, of being careful. It’s hot, it said. It’s reckless. It’s exactly what you need. She let go. Nathaniel guided her back against the wall, his mouth leaving a trail of kisses down her jawline, to the delicate skin of her neck. Her head fell back as she gasped, the sensation sending shivers down her spine. His hands moved with purpose, tracing the curves of her body like a man who’d imagined this far too many times. “Rachel,” he murmured against her skin, his voice low and ragged. “Are you even aware of what you're putting yourself in?” But she didn’t answer. She couldn’t. Instead, she pulled him closer. Her dress slipped from her shoulders, pooling at her feet. His kisses followed, exploring the soft slope of her collarbone, the rise of her chest, the curve of her waist. She clung to him like he was her last connection to the earth, her body a bundle of nerves and fire. Nathaniel was usually a man of control—of discipline and restraint. But tonight, none of that existed. His hands, his mouth, his body moved with desire that had simmered for months, now boiling over with no hope of containment. Her moans, breathy and soft, filled the room like a song only he could hear. Each sound pushed him further. Each touch set him aflame. They collapsed onto the bed, a tangle of limbs and whispers, of kisses that spoke of hunger and need and the thrill of doing something forbidden. She didn’t know what time it was. Didn’t care. All she knew was that she felt wanted. Craved. And alive. The hours melted into each other—one moment bleeding into the next. They were fire and friction, sighs and heat, the city lights painting their skin as they lost themselves over and over. By the time the clock struck 3:00 a.m., the room was a mess of discarded clothing, tangled sheets, and heavy breaths. Rachel lay on her back, chest rising and falling, her hair spread like a halo on the pillow. Nathaniel rested beside her, arm draped across her waist, eyes half-closed but still with influence of alcohol. Silence stretched between them, not awkward, but weighted. Real. Is it real? Am I dreaming? “What are we doing?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Nathaniel stared at the ceiling for a moment before answering. “I don’t know.” She turned her head, meeting his eyes. “This… this is bad” she laughs. He nodded slowly. “Yeah. It does.” Neither of them had answers. Only questions. Only the memory of hands and mouths and the dangerous thrill of crossing a line that should have never been crossed. But for tonight, there was no boss. No secretary. There were just them. Raw. Unfiltered. Reckless. A night where they let their desire make the decision out of them.
