Part 5

393 Words
Eirlys’s life is shaped by the trauma of her past and the mental health struggles she faces daily. Late at night, she often lies on her back, staring at the stars, lost in thoughts about what could have been. She wonders if her father had still been alive, she would never have faced such misery and tears. Her father’s death continues to haunt her, leaving her with a deep sense of loss and grief that often emerges during these quiet, solitary moments. Despite the emotional weight of her past, Eirlys tries to live independently. However, her claustrophobia complicates her living situation. Although the apartment should offer her solitude and peace, the tight space triggers her sense of being trapped, heightening her anxiety. She struggles daily with her phobia, and even though she tries to manage it, the feeling of being enclosed often exacerbates her fears and discomfort. This constant internal battle between seeking comfort and confronting her anxiety is a struggle she faces every day. Her anxiety doesn’t end with her claustrophobia. Even though Eirlys takes medication to manage her mental health, she still experiences intense episodes of terror. She frequently wakes up in the middle of the night, overwhelmed by fear, and often retreats to a corner of her apartment, wrapping herself in a blanket in an attempt to find comfort. The terror is a reminder of the past trauma that continues to affect her life. These nightly episodes are a symbol of the deep psychological scars she carries, scars that no amount of medication or sleep seems to heal. During the day, Eirlys forces herself to appear fine. She doesn’t want to burden Grace with the weight of her struggles. For Grace’s sake—and her own sanity—Eirlys puts on a mask, pretending to be normal and functioning. She knows that appearing well-adjusted allows her to fit in with her college peers, even though she feels like an outsider. Eirlys’s interactions with men trigger deep anxiety. Even a simple handshake or accidental touch from a male colleague can send her into a spiral of panic. Eirlys's encounter with her stepfather has left her feeling vulnerable and fearful of physical contact. These moments highlight how deeply her past has affected her, as the fear she feels is a visible reflection of the emotional scars that still influence her connections with others.
