Lena Brooks had one rule: never be late.
For three years, she had arrived at Knight & Hale Group before sunrise, carrying a cup of cheap coffee and a notebook filled with dreams no one knew about. She wasn't rich, powerful, or well connected. She was simply determined.
This morning was different.
The elevator doors opened on the thirty-second floor, and the entire office was in chaos.
"Where's the contract?" someone shouted.
"The CEO will be here in five minutes!"
Lena tightened her grip on the file she had been asked to deliver.
"I have it," she said, trying to stay calm.
She hurried toward the executive conference room, but just as she reached the door, another employee rushed around the corner and crashed into her.
The files scattered across the polished floor.
"Oh no!"
"I'm so sorry!" the man exclaimed, kneeling to help gather the papers.
Without realizing it, they mixed two identical black folders together.
Lena picked up the one closest to her, thanked him, and hurried into the conference room.
At the head of the long table sat Adrian Knight.
He didn't look up.
His attention remained fixed on the documents in front of him.
"You're two minutes early," he said in a calm, unreadable voice. "That's impressive."
Lena blinked.
Most people feared Adrian Knight. His sharp eyes, quiet confidence, and impossible standards had earned him a reputation throughout the company. One mistake around him could cost someone their job.
She carefully placed the folder in front of him.
"Your contract, sir."
He nodded once.
"Thank you."
Lena quietly left the room, relieved the task was over.
She had no idea she had just delivered the wrong file.
An hour later, the entire building fell silent.
The conference room doors burst open.
"Who brought me this file?" Adrian's voice echoed through the executive floor.
Everyone froze.
Lena felt her stomach sink.
"I... I did, sir."
He held up the folder.
"This isn't the partnership contract."
The room became painfully quiet.
Lena swallowed hard.
"I'm sorry... there must have been a mistake."
Adrian stared at her for a long moment before speaking.
"There was."
He closed the folder.
"And now I want to know how it happened."
For the first time since joining Knight & Hale Group, Lena realized one small mistake could change her life forever.
