THE CURSED SYSTEM: Rise of the Weakest CHAPTER 1 — THE NIGHT THE WEAKEST BOY DIED The night Aarav died, nobody came looking for him. Not his friends. He had none. Not the villagers. Most of them wouldn't notice he was gone. And certainly not the three boys who had left him bleeding in the most feared forest in Odisha. But death wasn't waiting for Aarav that night. Something much worse was. Something that had been waiting for him for eighteen years. Rain poured over Devgarh, a remote village hidden between the ancient hills and dense forests of Odisha, India. To outsiders, Devgarh was peaceful. Green fields surrounded old houses. Narrow roads twisted between enormous trees. During the day, farmers worked while children played near the village pond. But when darkness arrived, Devgarh changed. Doors were locked. Windows were closed. And nobody went near the forest beyond the northern hill. The villagers called it Kala Van. The Black Forest. There was an old rule in Devgarh. Never enter Kala Van after sunset. Aarav had followed that rule his entire life. Until tonight. "Get up." Aarav opened his eyes. A boot slammed into his ribs. Pain exploded through his body. He rolled across the muddy ground. Laughter surrounded him. Three boys stood nearby. And in front of them was Vikram. Nineteen years old. Tall. Powerful. The son of one of Devgarh's richest landowners. Vikram had everything Aarav didn't. Money. Friends. Respect. And strength. Aarav had only one thing. A reputation. Everyone knew him as the weakest boy in Devgarh. "Look at him," Vikram laughed. "He can barely stand." Aarav placed both hands against the ground. He tried to push himself up. His arms trembled. He fell again. The boys laughed louder. Aarav lowered his head. He hated that sound. He had heard it his entire life. When other children raced, Aarav finished last. When they fought, Aarav lost. When he tried to defend himself, someone stronger always reminded him where he belonged. At the bottom. "Get up," Vikram repeated. Aarav slowly stood. Blood ran from his lower lip. Vikram stepped closer. "Look at me." Aarav didn't. "I said look at me." Vikram grabbed his collar. Aarav finally raised his eyes. For a moment, neither spoke. Then Vikram smiled. "That's better." Something inside Aarav snapped. His hand tightened into a fist. Vikram noticed. His smile disappeared. "What?" Silence. "You want to hit me?" Aarav's heart pounded. He knew what would happen if he tried. He would lose. Again. But he was tired. Tired of being afraid. Tired of being weak. Tired of waking up every morning knowing nothing would change. His father's words suddenly returned to him. Words Aarav hadn't heard in seven years. "Being weak isn't something to fear, Aarav." "Staying weak is." Aarav raised his fist. The other boys stopped laughing. Vikram stared at him. Then he smiled. "Do it." Aarav swung. Vikram caught his wrist. Too easily. Aarav's eyes widened. Vikram twisted his arm. Pain shot through Aarav's body. "AH!" He dropped to his knees. Vikram punched him. Once. Twice. Three times. Aarav collapsed. "Remember this," Vikram whispered. He kicked Aarav in the stomach. "You will always be weak." Aarav coughed. He wanted to fight. His body wouldn't obey. Vikram turned to leave. Then he stopped. His eyes moved toward the distant forest. A cruel smile appeared on his face. "Actually..." He looked back at Aarav. "I have an idea." Aarav immediately knew something was wrong. Vikram pointed toward Kala Van. "Let's see how brave our little hero really is." Aarav's face went pale. "No." The two boys grabbed his arms. Aarav struggled. "Let me go!" Vikram laughed. "What's wrong?" He leaned closer. "Afraid of ghost stories?" "Vikram, don't do this." But they were already dragging him toward the forest. By the time they reached Kala Van, the sun was gone. Lightning split the sky. Aarav stared at the enormous trees. Every child in Devgarh knew the stories. Hunters had disappeared here. Travelers had entered and never returned. Some villagers claimed they heard voices calling their names from inside the forest. Aarav had never believed those stories. Standing at the entrance now... He wasn't so sure. "Take him inside," Vikram ordered. Even Vikram's friends hesitated. "Maybe we've gone far enough." Vikram glared at them. "Take him." They obeyed. The moment Aarav crossed between the first two trees, something changed. The sounds of the village disappeared. No dogs. No insects. No birds. Only rain. They walked deeper. Five minutes. Ten. Fifteen. Then they found something. A black stone pillar stood in a clearing. Ancient symbols covered its surface. Aarav stared. "What is that?" Nobody answered. He felt strangely drawn to it. As if he had seen those symbols before. Then— Grrrrrrr. Everyone froze. Something growled between the trees. One of Vikram's friends stepped backward. "What was that?" Another growl answered. Closer. "Vikram..." The two boys ran. "Idiots!" Vikram shouted after them. Then a branch snapped behind him. Vikram's face changed. All his confidence disappeared. He looked at Aarav. And Aarav understood. "Don't." Vikram grabbed him. "Vikram, DON'T!" He threw Aarav against the black pillar. Aarav's head struck the stone. He collapsed. Vikram ran. "VIKRAM!" No answer. Aarav tried to stand. His legs failed. Then he heard footsteps. Slow. Heavy. Coming closer. Lightning flashed. For one second, Aarav saw two enormous red eyes between the trees. Then darkness returned. Aarav stopped breathing. A voice whispered behind him. "Aarav..." His blood turned cold. "Who's there?" No answer. "Aarav..." This time, the voice came from somewhere else. Aarav ran. He didn't know where. He didn't care. Branches tore his clothes. His lungs burned. Something chased him. Fast. Too fast. Aarav looked back. That was his mistake. His foot caught a root. He fell. Something sharp tore across his chest. Aarav screamed. He rolled down a steep slope, crashing against rocks until his body finally stopped. He couldn't move. Warm blood spread beneath him. Above the slope, two red eyes appeared. Aarav understood. He was going to die. Eighteen years. And this was how his story ended. Weak. Alone. Forgotten. Aarav closed his eyes. "I'm sorry, Mother..." His breathing slowed. Then he remembered his father. Seven years ago, his father had disappeared without explanation. Some villagers said he had abandoned his family. Others claimed he had entered Kala Van and never returned. Aarav had spent seven years waiting. Seven years believing his father would come home. Now he would die without knowing the truth. "Father..." His heart slowed. Thump. ... Thump. ... Silence. Then— DING. Aarav's eyes opened. A blue light floated before him. Words appeared in the darkness. [SEARCHING FOR COMPATIBLE HOST...] "What...?" [HOST DETECTED.] [NAME: AARAV] [AGE: 18] [CONDITION: CRITICAL] [SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: 0.01%] Aarav stared at the floating words. "Am I dead?" [NO.] His eyes widened. It answered him. "What are you?" [ACCESS DENIED.] "Help me." The screen flickered. [HOST PHYSICAL ABILITY: EXTREMELY LOW.] Aarav almost laughed. Even this mysterious thing thought he was weak. A growl echoed above him. The red eyes were returning. Aarav clenched his fists. "Then make me stronger." The screen changed. [REQUEST DETECTED.] [WARNING: FORCED ENHANCEMENT MAY KILL HOST.] The creature began moving down the slope. Aarav looked directly at it. "If I do nothing, I'm dead anyway." Silence. "DO IT!" [CONFIRM?] "YES!" Blue light exploded through Aarav's body. He screamed. It felt like his blood had turned into fire. His muscles tightened. His bones shook. Then his heart slammed against his chest. THUMP! Aarav gasped. THUMP! His fingers moved. The bleeding stopped. Aarav slowly stood. For the first time in his life... He felt power. Then the blue screen suddenly turned red. [ERROR.] [UNKNOWN ENERGY DETECTED.] Aarav froze. "What?" [ANALYZING HOST...] [ERROR.] [BLOODLINE UNKNOWN.] [SEALED ENERGY DETECTED WITHIN HOST.] "Sealed?" Before Aarav could understand, the creature jumped from the darkness. A giant black wolf landed before him. Its eyes glowed red. Its enormous claws dug into the earth. The System flashed. [EMERGENCY QUEST ACTIVATED.] [SURVIVE UNTIL SUNRISE.] [REWARD: SYSTEM ACCESS.] [FAILURE: DEATH.] Aarav stared at the wolf. "How am I supposed to fight that?" The answer appeared immediately. [YOU ARE NOT.] Aarav blinked. "What?" One final word appeared. [RUN.] The wolf charged. Aarav ran. His body moved faster than ever before. He jumped over fallen trees. Dodged branches. But the wolf stayed behind him. [TEMPORARY ENHANCEMENT: 30 SECONDS REMAINING.] "What?!" Aarav ran faster. [20.] The wolf was closing in. Then Aarav saw something between the trees. A ruined temple. He raced toward it. [10.] The wolf nearly reached him. [5.] Aarav threw himself through the temple entrance. [1.] The power disappeared. He collapsed. Outside, the wolf stopped. It refused to enter. Aarav slowly raised his head. "Why?" The System appeared. [LOCATION DETECTED.] [UNKNOWN TEMPLE.] [DANGER LEVEL: UNMEASURABLE.] Aarav stared. Even the System didn't know this place? Then he saw something at the end of the temple. A massive black door. Thick chains covered it. The same symbols from the pillar were carved into its surface. Aarav walked closer. [WARNING.] He stopped. [DO NOT APPROACH.] "What's behind it?" [UNKNOWN.] Aarav's heart skipped. For some reason, he felt something beyond the door. Something familiar. He took another step. [HOST, STOP.] Aarav ignored it. He touched the door. BOOM! The entire temple shook. The System turned blood red. [CRITICAL WARNING.] [f*******n PRESENCE DETECTED.] [LEAVE IMMEDIATELY.] Then... A voice came from behind the door. "Aarav." He froze. No. Impossible. He knew that voice. He hadn't heard it for seven years. Aarav's hands began trembling. "Father?" Silence. Then again— "Aarav..." Tears filled his eyes. "FATHER!" He grabbed the chains. "Are you in there?!" [DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR.] "Father!" Something slammed against the other side. BOOM! Aarav fell backward. The voice changed. It became deeper. Older. "You finally came." Aarav stared at the door. The System began flashing. [ERROR.] [ERROR.] [HOST IDENTITY REANALYZED.] [BLOODLINE CONNECTION FOUND.] Aarav's heart stopped. One chain broke. CRACK! Then another. CRACK! "What is happening?!" The System displayed a new message. [AARAV IS NOT THE FIRST HOST.] The final chain shattered. The black door slowly opened. Aarav stepped backward. Complete darkness waited beyond it. Then two enormous golden eyes opened. The System flashed one final warning. [RUN, AARAV.] [THE ENTITY BEHIND THE DOOR IS THE PREVIOUS SYSTEM HOST.] Aarav couldn't move. The golden eyes stared directly into his soul. Then his father's voice whispered from the darkness. "Son..." Aarav's eyes filled with tears. "Father?" The figure stepped forward. And Aarav finally saw its face. His blood turned cold. It wasn't his father. It was Aarav himself. Older. Covered in blood. And smiling. Aarav stumbled backward. "Who... are you?" The older Aarav raised one finger to his lips. "Don't trust the System." [WARNING! HOST, RUN!] The stranger smiled. "Because I created it." Aarav froze. Then another blue screen appeared. But this one hadn't come from Aarav's System. It floated above the stranger's hand. [SECOND SYSTEM DETECTED.] [TIMELINE COLLISION HAS BEGUN.] Aarav stared in horror. The stranger looked directly at him. "Listen carefully, Aarav." "Tomorrow morning, everyone you love will die." Aarav stopped breathing. The stranger's smile disappeared. "And you're the one who kills them." END OF CHAPTER 1
