After a few hours mom knocks on my door. “I’ve got dinner!” She says. I opened the door and she is holding a pizza. I grab it from her hands and make my way to the bed. “By the way we are going shopping tomorrow for your birthday!” Mom says. My face lit up like a Christmas tree I love to go shopping! “I can’t wait!” I say. She just hugged me then we laid down and watched a movie before she went to her room. I got up and walked out on the balcony. Admiring the moon my wolf was itching to go on a run. I can’t let her out until I can do some recon on where we are. I once ran into a couple of crazy wolves. They tried to kill me and I learned my lesson about running just anywhere. After spending some time on my balcony I turned around and checked my phone. I had a message from mom. Be up and ready to go tomorrow by 9:00 We have a lot to do. Mom and I had a tradition every year on my Birthday we would get dressed up and go to dinner. I don’t know what she has planned for tomorrow but I bet it’s going to be amazing! I mean it is my 18th! I decided to unpack my stuff which I don’t normally do. But then again tomorrow is my birthday and even if it’s not true I want to pretend that this is my home. I quickly got ready for bed and immediately closed my eyes. I know I slept most the way here today but I’m exhausted. I wake up to the sounds of nature. Opening my eyes I take in the view of the forest. I absolutely love it here! I realized I had some time so I took my time showering and got dressed. I walk downstairs and greet my mother who is already in the kitchen. “Good morning mom!” I say after kissing her cheek. “Morning sweetheart. We are going shopping after breakfast and I have a few things to discuss with you on the way there.” She says. I look at her and smile. My mom is a no nonsense, straight to the point kind of personality. But she seemed a bit off today. After breakfast she says “The car is here, let’s go!” The car? Of course it’s here, we drove here. Where else would it be? Walking outside there is a black SUV parked in front with a man opening the door for us. Mom climbed in and I followed. “Where is the mall at?” I ask she says it’s about an hour away. “Is this all for my birthday? The house? The car service? The shopping?” I ask. She smile and says “Dear, I am going to tell you a story and hold your questions until I’m finished. I didn’t want to tell you this way but we are running out of time and you need to be prepared.” I just look at her and nod my head. She is kind of scaring me a bit but I put on a brave face and listen. “I used to live here when I was a teenager. We came back because your grandfather Samuel Covington passed away and we are here for the funeral. Your... your grandfather sent us away for our safety.....your real family lives here in Vail, Colorado..” She pauses looking for me to be doubtful. “I am not your birth mother.” She drops her head in shame. “Your real mom was my best friend. At the young age of 17 your mother got married to the love of her life and shortly after found out she was pregnant with you. Her and your father were thrilled. They were young but they were excited to have you in their lives...When your mother was about 8 months pregnant, her and your father were in a traffic accident. Unfortunately your father died, but they got your mom to the hospital soon enough to save you. She died shortly after you were born.” She again looks at me and I look for any sign that she is joking but I can clearly tell she’s not. “Something about the accident didn’t sit right with your grandfather. After doing some digging he found out that someone in your immediate family was responsible for what happened to your parents. Your grandfather came from one of the wealthiest families in the world. He was a wonderful person and he loved his wife and together they had 5 children. A two sets of twins and your mother. When the older twins turned 18 they were spoiled and lazy. He could see the the second set were on their way to being the same. Your great grandfather Darell Covington also saw how his grandchildren were acting. He changed his will to ensure the companies survival. In his will it stated that the first of his grandchildren to marry and have children would become the head of the Covington accounts. Until then your grandfather was in charge of and these accounts and would do as he saw fit until his passing. Child who met the requirements first would be in charge of Covington accounts. Your aunts and Uncles were too busy partying and didn’t even bother attended the will reading. Your mother was very young when he passed. She knew nothing of it. But Samuel knew and he said nothing to any of his children. But after your mother married and found out she was expecting he had already started the paperwork in her name to be in charge of the Covington accounts after his passing. One of your aunts found the paperwork and told the others. They were furious that their youngest sister would be in charge of the company. But your grandfather Samuel didn’t know if it was one or all of them who caused her accident. So he said you had died with her and sent you with me to live away from all the chaos. He sent you away with to keep you safe. Chances that they would come after you were high. So we decided it was best to say you died as well.” I sit there for a moment trying to process all of this. She gives me a few minutes to collect my thoughts before she continued. “Today at 1:00 we will be present for the reading of your grandfather’s will. We will be facing your Aunts, Uncles, and cousins. They don’t know of our presence yet.” She stops talking and watches my reactions carefully. I had a feeling that I was adopted. I never asked or freaked out because I knew that if I was she loved me like her own. But I never thought that our past would be this complicated. “So this is why we moved so much?” I ask. “Yes, we weren’t going to stop here until we could find out which of your relatives it was, but we have been searching for 18 years for the evidence to convict the guilty party.” Unsure how to handle this information only one question that pops in my head. “Can you tell me more about my parents?” I look in her eyes and I can see she is wondering why I’m not freaked out. “Sure! Your mother’s name was Lila, Lila Covington. You have her hair and her smile, but your eyes and olive skin tone are from your father. Your father’s name was Arlo King.” She says. “Wait, like Randall King?” I ask. “Yes, he is your father’s brother. He’s been keeping in touch with me to keep me updated on the investigation.” All this information swirling in my head has my head hurting again. “Okay, let’s take this one step at a time. An outfit for the reading and an outfit for our Birthday Dinner!” I say. My aunt pulls me into a hug and starts to cry. “I thought you would hate me for not telling you sooner.” I pull away and look in her eyes. “No matter what you do you are still my family and I will never hate you.” We both smile at each other as the man driving says. “We are here Miss Robinson.” “Thank you Fredrick.” She says. Fredrick opens the door and says “I’ll pick you up at 11:00. Miss Robinson.” He bows his head. “Miss King”. He bows again. Miss King? Oh yeah I guess my last name would be King now. Fredrick drives away and we walk inside. I need something sophisticated for 1:00 and something fun for Dinner! I walk in and found both of outfits quickly we still had 40 minutes to kill so I went to the salon and had them curl my long red hair. I had them do my makeup that complimented my green eyes. I went to the bathroom and changed into my sweetheart neckline black jumpsuit and my pen striped blazer along with my black 4 inch stilettos. I walked out of the bathroom and my mom started to tear up. “We are going to be late if you start crying now.” I say. She grabs my hand and we walk out the door. Fredrick greets us with another bow and we get in. “Home please Fredrick.” I state. My mother looks at me with adoration and pinched my cheek.
