I’m already at the main entrance and the principal Mr. Copper was standing there with a smile on his face. I think he’s in his 50’s. He seems nice. I greeted him nervously since I’m a bit late.
“ Good morning Mr. Cooper! Sorry for being a bit late, I had to go around in circles to find a vacant space for me to park.”
Mr. Cooper gave out his hand for a handshake and greeted me too.
“ Good morning Ms. Jacobs! No you’re not late, you’re actually just in time. The students and their parents will be having an orientation at the gymnasium first before going to their classrooms, there have been changes of schedules so it’s just right to let the parents know. So you still have time to go register your details in the system and get yourself settled. If you have any questions or problems just approach me anytime. In this school we look out for each other. Lovely to have you here.”
The warm welcome made me feel better and the anxiety I was feeling a while ago has vanished.
“ Thank you Mr. Cooper, I appreciate everything you have just said to me. Just call me Brie, I’m not used to being called Ms. Jacobs. Pleasure to be teaching in this school” I let out a small nervous chuckle.
We went inside and Mr. Cooper guided me to the registrar to get my details registered. This lady with blonde curly handed me a form to fill up along with a sweet smile. I looked at her nameplate and name was Norah. This was the person who called me last week for my schedule. I better finish filling out this form before the orientation finishes.

I handed my form to Norah, and I think she could see I’m a bit nervous because I keep avoiding eye contact with her while she types my details in. She started talking to cut off the awkward silence.
“ It’s okay to be nervous, I had those feelings when I first came here too. The worst case is I even vomited, so don’t worry. You’ll get used to it in no time. But when it gets really bad go to the teachers bathroom at the west wing at cubicle 4, if you smoke. Just to release some tension. It’s near the window so it’s safe. Now smile at the camera darling for your ID photo.”
She gave me a wink after saying the smoking tip and handed me my paperwork that I have to fill up once I get to the classroom for student records. I took a deep breath to prepare myself to talk in a more relaxed way and a soft chuckle as I pressed my nail tips against each other. I gave out a smile for my photo then I responded to her.
“ Thank you for the tip, I’ll keep that in mind. Where can I find this classroom? Hopefully the kids will be nice to me.”
She replied with a smile, trying to cheer me up as she saw me fidgeting with my nails because I was obviously nervous.
“ The classroom is the first door in that hallway, it’s near here so you could ask me if you need any help. Plus relax, you’re gonna do great. These kids are angels.”
Having this much support on my first day makes me overwhelmed. I felt safe in this environment, I hope nothing goes wrong. She handed me my ID then I waived Norah goodbye as I told her I was going to the classroom already. I stood in front of the classroom door and looked around for a bit, the room was filled with cartoon animals on the wall. It looked like a safari adventure. I finally went inside, there was an area at the left corner filled with toys and children's books and on the right corner there was a time out area. I hope I won’t send any students for a time out. I went back to my desk and looked through the paper works I have to fill up by the end of the day for the records of my students.
After a few minutes the students finally came in, some of them were running, some had big smiles on their faces while the others were frowning and some were quiet. Different personalities and emotions were inside the classroom. As everyone was seated I started to introduce myself.
“ Hi, I’m Aubriana but you can just call me Brie. I know I came late in the school year but I just want everyone to know that I’ll do my best to be your teacher and everyone’s friend. If anyone has questions you can approach me. If you have any questions about me feel free to ask them.”
All of them started raising their hands, all of them were curious. Seeing them interested makes me even more happier and excited to be teaching these angels. Questions were already popping all around the classroom which is giving me a hard time to catch up.
“ How old are you Ms. Brie?” , “ What’s your favorite color Ms. Brie?” , “ What was your favorite subject when you were in school Ms. Brie” and so on.
I answered all their questions happily until I heard about a question asking for what is my favorite candy. I suddenly had a flashback in my head when I was younger. I remember I would always save money just to buy myself some candy with my childhood best-friend. Eating the candy little by little so that I could have enough for the whole week until I was able to buy some again. Having my favorite candy around me wasn’t just because of those sweet flavors but it was also a way for me to comfort myself and that’s where my nickname came from. I got my bag and brought out my emergency kit and yes it was filled with those candy that I was talking about. Pop Rocks, it is and will forever be my favorite candy.
As these kids saw me holding them they were all happy because the majority of them love that candy. Seeing their smiles that they know we all have something in common. The love for sweets.
I came here to teach because I replaced the previous teacher. The faculty and staff gave me a warm welcome and all of them were supportive plus the students are nice and bright. Which makes me wonder.
“ Why did the previous teacher resign or had gone MIA all of a sudden? Is something wrong here?”
