Chapter Fifteen Doris Calder sat back, enjoying the sumptuous luxury of her first-class seat, as she gazed out of the window at the rolling countryside speeding by. Although her stomach was growling, she politely refused the offer of tea or coffee from the young girl with the refreshments trolley, and had to look away before being tempted by the vast array of pastries and cakes displayed under their plastic covers. On days when she was conducting a séance, Doris refused herself food, save for a couple of pieces of fruit and a few dry digestive biscuits, which she ate just before swallowing the raft of blood-pressure tablets her doctor insisted she needed.
