William sensed his wife’s aloofness from the minute he arrived home. He knew only too well from past experience that, if there was an argument brewing, she would keep it to herself while the girls were up, and vent only after they had gone to sleep.
He assumed the reason was that he had gone into work that day after promising to take the whole week off to help her settle in. But with business the way it was at the moment, he knew that, for the sake of his family, his loyalties had to lie with his clients.
