Chapter 18

Miguel “When you married Ramona…” I knew exactly what Damien was going to say so I cut him off before he could finish up the sentence. “Penelope is different from Ramona,” I said, “the way I feel about her is different.” “You were so sure then back too.” “I know what I'm doing, Damien,” I said to my best friend. “I just don't want to see another woman get hurt,” he said to me which brought a frown to my face. “Why do you care so much?” I asked, my arms folded across my chest, “do you like Penelope?” He scoffed, “of course not.” “Won't you invite me in?” he changed the subject quickly. “No,” I said stubbornly, “you're not meant to be here anyway.” “Hey, man! That's not fair.” I walked to the front porch of my bungalow and opened the door, entering without inviting Damien inside. It was not like he needed an invitation to enter my house anyway. Damien walked in freely like he owned the place. His first stop was to my fridge where he brought out a carton of chilled beer and opened one with his teeth, spitting out the cork into the wastebin in a corner with a perfect throw. I shook my head and picked up a beer too only to do the same. “The business in the south is taking up a lot more money than we budgeted for,” he remarked as he plopped down on a couch. I sat opposite him and crossed my legs. “You think we should pull out?” I asked him. “I just don't think it's worth it anymore,” came his response, “maybe we should do something else besides real estate for a change.” I grunted. “I don't know,” I said, “It's pretty good money.” “But we should diversify our investment portfolio, don't you think?” “We've got stocks and real estate. What else do you think we need to do? huh?” “Own a couple casinos?” he suggested. I set my beer down, almost halfway through the bottle already. “You know how I feel about…” “Oh please! Spare me the church thing,” Damien replied, “you're a f*****g man w***e and they still collect your money. You really think they give a f**k if you make money off one of the seven deadly sins?” “I don't know man,” I was still hesitant, “I want to be able to help people with my money and…” “If you're so worried about the church cutting you off, you wouldn't be trying to screw one of their nuns.” His cold fact hit me like a bucket of ice. He was right of course. He was always right. “Technically,” I still had to defend myself though, “she's not a nun yet.” Damien shook his head, not breaking eye contact with me, “I wonder how you sleep at night, Miguel. Trying to f**k one of Jesus's brides…” “That's not fair!” I stopped him, “and Jesus has got himself lots of bride that I'm not trying to screw.” Damien raised his eyebrows. “Really? You're telling me you've never f****d a sister before?” “Never! I would never…” but my voice trailed off when I remembered one isolated incident years ago. “Fine,” I admitted, “it was one time and I had no idea she was a nun.” “So you met a woman who with a nun garb and you thought to yourself, that has got to be a costume?” “It wasn't my fault,” I replied, “it was Halloween. I was right to think it was a costume.” “And after she told you she was a nun,.you thought what?” “I assumed she was into role playing,” I said with a small laugh because looking back now it was funny as hell. “You're the best candidate for hell fire,” Damien laughed. “But it was the best s*x of my life,” I said, shaking my head, “those nuns do know how to get nasty.” “You’re a real bad boy, Miguel.” We laughed heartily. “Is that rain?” he asked suddenly as the winds began to blow heavily. I stood up and walked to the full length window that faced the lake, “Oh s**t! Penelope. She's going to be stuck in the rain.” “Where are you going?” Damien asked me. “I was supposed to drive her home,” I said to Damien as the rain began pouring in torrents. “So what are you going to do now? Get soaked just because…” I was outside the house before Damien could finish his sentence. But I was too late because Penelope was storming towards me in the rain. I stood frozen there as I watched her walk towards me. She was clearly soaked from the rain and while she should be freezing, she looked like there was fire in her legs from the way she stomped her feet as she walked. Her clothes were plastered onto her skin and I was blown away by the way her hips swung from side to side. By the time she was standing in front of me—the both of us were standing under the torrential rain, staring right into each other's eyes. Until my eyes dropped to her chest and I was incapable of lifting my head again. Her n*****s were pointed and round, glaring at me like it was inviting me to touch them. “You just left!” the scream that rose from her throat drowned the sound of the rain. “And then left me? How the hell was I supposed to find my way back under this dreary weather?” I wanted to kiss her in the rain. My head was full of how her mouth would taste mixed with the rain water and it made my c**k throb. “You… just get out of my way,” she yelled and marched past me. She wanted to become a nun but she had yet to bring her fiery anger under control. I turned to watch her hips and buttocks sway from side to side as she climbed the steps to the front porch of my bungalow. When I suddenly remembered Damien was inside, I jogged the rest of the way into the house. I could not trust Damien with any woman. I opened the door and I saw Penelope's wet prints leading farther into the house. But there was no Damien in sight. My heart thudded as my mind began to create images of the two of them together. “Damien!” I yelled, walking to the kitchen only to see him by the sink watching the rain. “You son of a b***h!” I yelled, “you did it on purpose didn't you?” He looked at me blankly and asked, “what are you talking about?” One of Damien's greatest gifts was lying smoothly but I had been friends with him for years and he could never fool me. “You hid so I would think… never mind,” I hissed, not wanting to give him the satisfaction of seeing me flustered. But he laughed at me. He laughed till the point that tears dropped from his face. “What's so funny?” I demanded from him. “You thought that in the few seconds you were away, Penelope and I?” he began to laugh again. “I don't trust you,” I said to him, grabbing another beer from the crate, “I know it's something you can do.” “Hey! Bro code, I would never break that,” he said but the smile on his face did not make him look convincing. “Sure,” I did not believe him. He shook his head, “who knew the great and sexy Miguel Ramirez could be this insecure? huh?” “I am not…” I began hearing heavy knocks on the front door just then. I walked to the door and opened it to see Claudia in a see through dress that clung to her body as she was clearly soaked from the rain. “What the hell Claudia?” I asked. If I had known she was this clingy, I never would have gone out with her in the first place. “I’m really sorry,” she said sweetly like this was not on purpose, “I was in the neighbourhood when it began pouring and this was the closest place I knew.” Her reason for being here was bullshit. There were a string of small shops that she could have stayed in to avoid getting soaked. She tried to step forward but I stopped her by making my body block the entrance completely. “You can't come in here, Claudia,” I said to her, my tone firm, “I'll order uber for you to…” “Who’s there?” Damien walked up behind me. He took one look at Claudia and drew me back to allow Claudia to enter the house. “Let’s be hospitable to those in need,” he winked at me as he eyed Claudia's mountain breasts. I shook my head and stepped away from the entrance completely. “Thank you,” Claudia's eyes had shifted to Damien, almost making me roll my eyes. “I’m Justin River,” Damien introduced himself to Claudia, “what's your name pretty woman?” I was done with my friend. He had come here to judge me and persuade me not to go out with Penelope but he was way worse than I was.
