“He wanted Marie’s pin.” “Her pin? Why?” “I don’t know. I didn’t have the pin, but you did. Don’t you remember?” I suddenly felt dizzy, a wave of the memory returning. I was running through the woods, my breathing coming in shallow gasps. I held the pin clutched in my hand, my small, chubby fingers pressed against it. It fell off her when I escaped.
