Chapter 8: The Key and The Secret

1391 Words
That key wasn't for a locker. It was for Damien's past. Part 1: The Locker I didn't sleep that night. Not for a single minute. The small silver key was in my palm, pressing into my skin. It was cold at first. Then it started to feel warm. Like it had a heartbeat of its own. Aryan had said, "This opens information." Damien had said, "Come to my place at 9 PM." Both of them wanted me. Both of them were hiding something. At 2 AM I gave up on sleep. I sat on my bed with the key under the lamp light. There was a tiny number engraved on it. 247. What locker has a number 247? I googled it. City Bank. Locker Section B. My heart started racing. The next morning I called office. "Ms. Aarya, you have a presentation today," my manager said. "I'm not feeling well," I lied. My voice was shaking. "Take rest," she said. I hung up and stared at the key. By 10 AM I was standing in front of City Bank. The AC hit my face and I shivered. It wasn't from cold. It was from fear. "May I help you?" the bank manager asked. He was an old man with glasses. "Box 247," I said. My voice came out too loud. He looked at the key. Then at me. "This is a private locker, ma'am. Are you the authorized person?" "I... I think so," I whispered. He took me to the basement. Cold. Silent. Rows and rows of steel lockers. He inserted his master key. I inserted mine. Click. The locker opened. I expected documents. Contracts. Maybe money. But inside was a black photo album. Old. The edges were worn. My hands were trembling as I pulled it out. The manager looked at me. "Do you need help?" "No," I said quickly. "I'm fine." I sat on the small stool in the corner and opened the first page. Damien. He looked so young. Maybe 18. Hair messy. Big smile. And beside him... a girl. She had long hair. Laughing eyes. She was holding his arm like she owned him. Second page: Same girl. But in a hospital bed. Tubes in her nose. Damien was holding her hand. His face was broken. Third page: A newspaper cutting pasted carefully. "CAR ACCIDENT CLAIMS LIFE OF BUSINESSMAN'S FIANCÉE" "Anaya Sen, 22, fiancée of Damien Roy, died last night..." My breath caught. So this was it. This was the secret Aryan wanted me to find. This was why Damien was always so cold. So grumpy. I turned the last page. There was a note. In Damien's handwriting. I recognized it from the contract. "I will never love again. Love is a curse. It takes everything and gives nothing back. Until her." Until her? Until me? My phone vibrated in my pocket. Unknown number. I answered with shaking hands. "Did you find it?" It was Aryan. "Who are you?" I whispered. "Someone who doesn't want you to end up like her," he said. "Be careful, Aarya. He doesn't love you. He loves her ghost." Click. The line went dead. I closed the album. My chest felt heavy. I wasn't just an employee to him. I was a replacement. Part 2: Confrontation I didn't go home. I didn't go to office. I went straight to Roy Industries. The 40th floor. Damien's office. His secretary stood up. "Ms. Aarya, you can't go in. Mr. Roy is in a meeting with investors." "Move," I said. I pushed the door open. 12 people in suits turned to look at me. Damien was standing at the head of the table. Presentation on the screen behind him. For 2 seconds, he looked shocked. Then his face went cold. The mask. "What is the meaning of this?" His voice was low. Dangerous. I walked in. My heels clicked on the marble floor. Everyone was watching. I pulled out the photo album and threw it on the glass table. It landed with a loud thud. "Who was she, Damien?" Silence. You could hear a pin drop. Damien's jaw tightened. For a second I saw pain in his eyes. Real pain. Then it was gone. "Get out. Now," he said. "No," I said. "You signed a contract to own my time. Not my questions." The investors were staring. Whispering. Damien looked at them. "Meeting adjourned." "Sir, but the deal—" "I said adjourned!" he yelled. Everyone scrambled out. The door closed. Now it was just us. "Are you out of your mind?" he said. He walked to me fast. "Do you know what you just did?" "I know exactly what I did," I said. "I asked a question. Who was she?" Damien turned away. Went to the window. His back to me. "Her name was Anaya," he said quietly. "My fiancée." "I know that," I said. "What I don't know is why you hired me." He turned around. Slowly. "Because you don't look like her," he said. "Not even a little." "Then why me?" "Because you don't care who I am," he said. "You argued with me on day one. You said no. Everyone else says yes to Damien Roy. You didn't." He walked to me. Close. I could smell his cologne. "The contract... it was wrong. I know that. I was scared. Scared of getting close and losing again." "So you controlled me?" "So I could keep you safe," he said. "From him. From the world. From me." His eyes were red. The grumpy boss. The billionaire. He looked tired. Human. "I didn't mean to fall for you, Aarya," he whispered. "It just happened. And now I'm terrified." My heart was pounding so loud I thought he could hear it. "And Aryan?" I asked. Damien's face hardened again. "Aryan is my brother." "What?" "He's my younger brother. And he wants to destroy everything I built. Starting with you." Part 3: The Truth "Brother?" The word felt wrong in my mouth. Damien nodded. He walked to his desk and poured himself water. His hand was shaking. "Roy Industries was supposed to be ours. Equal. But when father died, the board chose me. Because I was older. Because I was 'stable'." He laughed without humor. "Aryan never forgave me." "So the accident..." "Wasn't an accident," Damien finished. "The police said drunk driver. But the driver was working for Aryan." My knees felt weak. I sat down on the chair. "Anaya was in the car with me," Damien said. "We were coming back from engagement shopping. A truck hit us. She..." He couldn't finish. I looked at the photo album on the table. At the smiling girl. "I'm sorry," I whispered. "Don't be," Damien said. "That was 5 years ago. I buried myself in work. In control. In rules." He looked at me. "Until you walked into my office and told me your ideas were better than mine." A small smile touched my lips. "They were." "I know," he said. And for the first time, he smiled back. A real smile. My phone buzzed. Aryan: Glass House. Midnight. Come alone. We need to talk. I showed the message to Damien. His face went dark. "Don't go." "Why? Are you scared of what he'll say?" "I'm scared of what he'll do to you," Damien said. "He's dangerous, Aarya." "And you're not?" I stood up. "Both of you are playing games with me." Damien grabbed my wrist. Gently. "Then don't play. Choose." "Choose what?" "Choose yourself," he said. "Whatever you decide, I'll accept it." He let go of my hand. I walked to the door. Stopped. "The contract," I said without turning. "What about it?" "Tear it up." Silence. Then I heard paper ripping. Once. Twice. I turned. Damien was tearing the 50-page contract into pieces. Slowly. Deliberately. He dropped the pieces on the floor. "There," he said. "You're free." Free. The word echoed in my head. I should have felt happy. Relieved. But all I felt was empty. As I walked out, my phone buzzed again. Bank Alert: 10,00,000 BDT credited. Sender: D. Roy A message followed: "Not salary. Severance. So you can start over. Without me." I stood in the hallway, holding the phone. The contract was gone. But the feeling wasn't. Two brothers. One dead girl. And me. Caught in the middle.
