33 GUATIZA‘Well, that’s that, then.’ Clarissa gave me a sympathetic look and headed back to the car. I stood watching until I could no longer see the boat. Even if I hightailed it to the local police station and explained what was happening, Billy would be dumped overboard no doubt with heavy weights tied to his ankles long before the cops mounted a response. And there was no way I was about to commandeer a boat and give chase. I had no experience with boats and no authority. Defeated, I made to follow Clarissa when a man standing on the other side of the harbour caught my eye. He turned away before I had a chance to make out his features, but he seemed familiar.
