When we stopped for petrol and Brace went to pay, Plant turned around and glared at me and said, ‘You shouldn’t have done that.’ ‘What?’ ‘Shot your mouth off.’ ‘I didn’t shoot my mouth off.’ ‘Then what would you call broadcasting your tip-off to the whole nick, then?’ ‘Not the whole nick. Just the squad.’ ‘You really don’t get it, do you.’ ‘Get what.’ He inhaled sharply. ‘You’ll come down to earth with a thump, believe me.’ I said nothing.
