Chapter 2

"Please, stop this nonsense. I admit I was in the wrong back then, but six years have passed, surely enough time for you to let go of your anger. Just be reasonable. And where is the child? What did you do with the baby?" Callum reached out, trying to take hold of my hand, but I immediately stepped sharply backward, putting a safe distance between us. "When exactly did I ever agree to marry you in the first place?" A flicker of impatience crossed his eyes. "Must you always be so difficult? I have already apologized. What more do you possibly want? You're only making a fool of yourself. My grandfather has passed away, and now I hold full authority over the entire family estate. No one is left here to stand up for you anymore. There is simply no point in carrying on like this." His words struck me like a heavy blow, and a sharp pain pierced my chest. I remembered clearly, back when his grandfather lay gravely ill, he had reaffirmed Callum as the sole heir of the Voss family, but only on the strict condition that Callum and I be formally engaged. Yet the very moment Callum gained complete control of the family's power and wealth, he had humiliated me at our own engagement party, turning me into the laughingstock of the whole city. That cruel act had worsened the old gentleman's condition beyond repair. Even after he had mustered his last bit of strength to arrange for my safe passage abroad, he had passed away not long after. Looking now at Callum's utterly indifferent expression, I felt a cold chill spread through my entire body. I took a deep breath and spoke firmly, "I am telling you this for the very last time. I will never, ever marry you. Besides, bigamy is a serious crime." I raised my left hand, slowly waving it right before his eyes, letting the diamond ring glint clearly in the light. Callum's eyes widened instantly, his pupils contracting in shock. My brother let out a mocking snort. "You think wearing any random ring means you are actually married? Cerys, with your stubborn, impossible temperament, who else on earth besides him would ever be willing to take you as a wife?" He turned toward Callum, his tone suddenly meek and apologetic, "I am truly sorry. It is my fault. We clearly failed to raise her properly, which is why she keeps telling such ridiculous lies." My mother nodded quickly, her face filled with feigned shame. "You ungrateful, stubborn girl! He has already offered you a way out, yet you still refuse to relent. Have you no shame at all? Stop making a spectacle of yourself!" Seeing how fiercely my own family sided with him, every trace of doubt vanished from Callum's eyes. He let out a soft, self‑assured sigh. "Come on… you have always loved me deeply. How could you possibly go and marry someone else?" He spoke with absolute certainty, convinced I could never belong to any other man. I almost wanted to laugh aloud. If only he knew I was not only happily married, but also already raising a five‑year‑old child with my husband. I was just about to correct him, but he glanced casually at his watch and cut me off, "The gala is about to begin. Go wait for me in the private lounge upstairs. Once we settle things after tonight, I will throw you the grand wedding you deserve, making up for everything you missed." He gestured to his assistant, signaling to escort me there. "There is no need. I already have—" Before I could finish my sentence, he simply turned away and walked off alongside my parents and brother, not even glancing back once. I could barely suppress the bitter smile tugging at my lips. How utterly ridiculous it all was. Just then, a small figure came darting toward me, his face beaming with pure delight. "Mommy!" I instantly brushed aside all heavy thoughts, bending down to take his warm little hand. Hand in hand, we walked back into the main hall. Right at that moment, my husband called, and I stepped aside briefly to answer. But by the time I hung up, my little boy had vanished from sight. Panicked, I began searching frantically through the crowd. Suddenly, a woman rushed straight at me, raising her voice in a shrill, furious shout, pointing a finger right at my face. "You shameless hussy! So you are the one seducing my husband! I will tear you apart!" I caught her raised wrist firmly, stopping her from striking me, and spoke sharply, "I have never even met your husband! I have absolutely no idea who you are talking about!" The woman let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "You dare to lie to my face? You look so proper and respectable on the outside, yet you stoop to stealing another woman's man! Home‑wreckers like you deserve every bit of punishment you get!" Hearing her loud accusations, the surrounding guests immediately turned their heads, their eyes filling with obvious disdain and condemnation as they looked me over. I met her gaze calmly and coldly, refusing to show any sign of weakness. "You had better produce solid evidence to prove I have done what you claim. If you have nothing but empty slander, I will not hesitate to sue you for defamation." A flicker of unease flashed across the woman's eyes. She instinctively glanced quickly toward one specific corner of the grand hall. I followed the direction of her gaze, and there she stood, watching me with that familiar, feignedly innocent smile. It was Liora. She stepped forward slowly, her voice soft and dripping with false pity, meant to carry far enough for everyone nearby to hear clearly. "My dear sister, I truly never imagined, after all these years away, you would come back and lower yourself to such disgraceful behavior."
