CHAPTER 2

The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming wildflowers, and the soft rustle of leaves whispered secrets to those who gathered beneath its boughs. This was the Moonlit Glade, a sacred place where werewolves would come to seek guidance, share stories, and find solace under the watchful eye of the full moon. The sun cast its warm glow over the lush meadow, where Ryker and I lay entwined, basking in the gentle rustle of the wind. We had escaped the confines of our daily routines, seeking solace in the serenity of nature. The soft grass cradled our bodies as we gazed up at the sky, watching the clouds drift lazily by. My hand absently stroked Ryker's hair, my mind wandering to the secret I kept hidden. I had intended to reveal my pregnancy to him today, but the moment never seemed right. Now that we lay together, I felt the weight of my unspoken words. Ryker, obviously sensing my distraction, turned to me with a questioning gaze. "Hey, what's on your mind?" My heart skipped a beat as I thought of my perfect chance, but the words caught in my throat. "Just enjoying the view," I replied, forcing a smile. Ryker's eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn't press the issue. Instead, he pulled me closer, his lips brushing against my ear. "I love days like this, just us together." My heart swelled with different emotions. I loved him, more than anything, and the thought of not telling him the news was unbearable. Just as we were lost in our little world, a rustling in the bushes nearby broke the spell. A young wolf, panting and excited, emerged from the underbrush. "Ryker, Kaida! The Elder has called a gathering at the Moonlight Shade. Everyone must be there!" Ryker's expression turned serious, and he sat up, pulling me with him. "What's going on?" The young wolf shook his head. "I don't know, but it sounds important. We have to go now!" With a sense of foreboding, We reluctantly left our peaceful sanctuary, following the wolf to the Moonlight Shade. The air was electric with anticipation as we approached the gathering place. What would the Elder announce? And how would it affect our lives? My secret seemed to grow heavier with each step as if the universe was conspiring against me. As we reached the Shade, the crowd parted, revealing Lyrien Blackwood, the Wolf King, standing beside the Elder. My heart skipped a beat. What did this mean? The Elder raised his hands, and the murmurs ceased. "Brothers and sisters, we gather here tonight to discuss a matter of great importance. A union between our pack and another, one that will secure our future and strengthen our bonds." My mind reeled as Lyrien's gaze met mine, his eyes burning with an intensity that made my skin prickle. I felt Ryker's hand tighten around hers, a silent question in his touch. What did this union mean for us? And how would it change our lives forever? I stood beside Ryker, my heart racing with anticipation and fear. The Elder's words hung in the air, heavy with significance. A union between our pack and another? What did it mean? Lyrien Blackwood, the Wolf King, stepped forward, his piercing gaze sweeping the crowd. His eyes locked onto mine, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. "The time has come to strengthen our pack's bonds and secure our future," Lyrien declared, his voice commanding attention. "I am pleased to announce that our pack will be united with the Nightshade pack through a sacred bond." The crowd erupted into murmurs, whispers spreading like wildfire. I felt Ryker's hand tighten around mine, his eyes questioning. "And who will be the lucky one to forge this bond?" someone called out. Lyrien's gaze never wavered from mine. “Kaida Ravenwood, daughter of the Ravenwood family, will be my mate and my queen." The world around me shattered. Gasps and cheers exploded from the crowd, while I stood frozen, my mind reeling. Me? Lyrien's mate? It couldn't be. It's not feasible! It's not possible! Ryker's hand dropped from mine, his face ashen. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, unable to breathe. The Elder approached me, a warm smile on his face. "Kaida, come forward. Your destiny awaits." I took a step back, my heart screaming in protest. This couldn't be happening. I loved Ryker, not Lyrien. But the Elder's gentle yet firm grip guided me forward, toward the Wolf King. As I reached Lyrien's side, he took my hand, his touch sending shivers down my spine. I felt like I was trapped in a nightmare, unable to wake up. The crowd cheered, their voices fading into the background as I met Ryker's devastated gaze. My heart broke, knowing I'd hurt him irreparably. What have I gotten myself into? Why me? Why? Lyrien's grip on my hand tightened, his eyes gleaming with a fierce intensity. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, with rules I couldn't control. The Elder raised his hands, and the crowd fell silent. "Let us celebrate this union, a bond that will strengthen our packs and secure our future!" As the cheers and applause erupted again, I felt Ryker's eyes on me, burning with a mix of sadness and anger. I wanted to reach out to him, to explain, but Lyrien's hold on my hand kept me in place. The ceremony began, a blur of words and rituals that I couldn't focus on. My mind raced with thoughts of Ryker, of our love, of the secret I still kept hidden. When the Elder pronounced us mated, Lyrien's lips claimed mine in a fierce, possessive kiss. I felt like I was drowning, unable to escape the fate that had been thrust upon me. As we broke apart, gasping for air, Ryker's figure disappeared into the crowd, leaving me with a sense of desperation and loss. I was now Lyrien's mate, bound to him by pack law and ceremony. But my heart belonged to Ryker, and I knew that this union would never be a true one. The celebration raged on, but I was trapped in a prison of my own making. How could I escape this fate and follow my heart?
