Early the next morning, I gathered all my documents and went straight to the office.
The lobby's glass doors reflected the deathly white lights.
When I walked in, Vivian was leaning against a desk, tapping scarlet nails against a document.
She wore a tight black dress that made the executive badge pinned over her chest look especially glaring.
"Well, if it isn't our assistant, Emma." She put deliberate emphasis on the word "assistant." "Here this early to quit?"
Andy, the head of HR, stood awkwardly to the side, looking as though he wanted to speak but thought better of it.
Calmly, I placed my resignation letter on the desk. "That's right. Please process it as soon as possible."
Vivian abruptly pressed one hand over the document. "What's the rush?"
She leaned close, her overpowering scent making my temples throb. "You know, Daniel worked very late at my place last night."
She ran a suggestive finger over the red mark on her neck, her voice thick with provocation. "Young men have such impressive stamina."
I clenched my palm until my nails dug into the flesh.
Just then, the office door swung open and Daniel rushed in carrying a stack of files.
"Vivian, the reports you asked for."
His voice cut off abruptly.
Three pairs of eyes met across the room.
Daniel's tie was crooked, and a smear of lipstick still stained his shirt collar.
The moment he saw me, panic flashed across his face. "Emma? What are you doing here?"
"Taking care of something with Vivian," I said, my voice cold enough to cut. I looked at him as if he were my enemy. "You like the way she takes care of business too, don't you?"
Vivian burst out laughing and patted Daniel's shoulder intimately. "Your girlfriend is hilarious."
She turned to me with a sneer. "Emma, you have no status and no connections. Once you leave this place, no one else will hire you. Isn't that right, Daniel?"
Daniel stood rooted to the spot. His lips moved several times, but in the end, he lowered his head and began straightening a stack of files that wasn't messy in the first place.
That small gesture hurt more than any words could have.
I grabbed my signed resignation approval and gave Daniel one last look before turning away. "You know, while I was packing yesterday, I found the diamond ring you proposed to me with."
When his head snapped up, I laughed softly, my voice full of ridicule. "It was fake."
When I walked out of the building, the sky hung so low and dark it felt ready to crush me.
I took a deep breath and called Dad. "Dad, I quit. I'll come home tomorrow."
His relieved voice came through the phone. "Good. Just come home."
After hanging up, I looked back at the office building where I had worked for 3 years. My heart was ice-cold.
The fluorescent tube in the rented apartment buzzed, casting a sickly blue-white light.
When Daniel chased me inside, I was stuffing my last sweater into my suitcase.
"Emma, don't do this!"
He grabbed my wrist, panic seeping into his voice. "There's really nothing between Vivian and me. She's just... a little enthusiastic."
I shook him off and took a velvet box from the drawer.
Inside lay the diamond ring he had spent a year saving for.
I threw it into the trash in front of him. The sharp clang of metal against the bin rang through the room.
"Enthusiastic enough to leave hickeys on your neck? Enthusiastic enough to make you wear the same shirt for three days straight?"
Pointing at the clothes rack on the balcony, I closed my eyes and forced out the painful truth. "Daniel, every time I wash your clothes, all I can smell is her scent!"
His face turned deathly pale, and he hurried to take my hand. "Let me explain."
"Explain what?" I sneered and flung him off. "How you told her I was ugly and poor? Or how you threw away your dignity for a promotion?"
A violent storm broke outside. Raindrops struck the windows like countless tiny slaps.
Daniel slumped onto the edge of the bed, water dripping from his hair onto the floor.
"I know I don't deserve you, but this promotion really matters to me. How am I supposed to marry you if I can't get a better position?"
He looked heartbroken as he spoke, yet menace and calculation lurked in his eyes.
A thousand tiny aches gnawed at my heart like ants.
I zipped my suitcase shut, the interlocking metal teeth sounding like an ending. "Whatever you say."
With that, I turned toward the door.
"Where are you going?"
He jumped up and blocked the doorway, unwilling to let me leave.
"On a business trip. The company sent me away at the last minute. I'll be gone for a week."
I brushed him off with the first excuse that came to mind, laughing coldly inside.
He opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but ultimately only sighed. "Be careful, then. Come back soon."
I didn't answer. I dragged my suitcase out of the apartment we had shared and went straight to the witch for the mate rejection ritual.
The process was agonizing, but the moment the mate bond vanished completely from my body, I felt lighter than ever before.
There was no connection left between Daniel and me. Finally, I could make a clean break from him.
