On my second day home, Dad arranged for me to meet the man I was supposed to marry.
I was in the villa's reception room when the doors opened, and my coffee lodged in my throat.
The man before me wore an immaculate suit and an amused smile. He was the childhood nemesis I had never gotten along with: Leo, heir to the Alpha position of the Moonridge Pack.
"Leo! Why is it you?"
I slammed down my cup. The clatter of porcelain against saucer startled a bird perched outside the window.
"What? Disappointed to see me?"
Leo polished his gold-rimmed glasses at an unhurried pace, his tone as irritating as ever. "I heard your poor boyfriend cheated on you with John's illegitimate daughter, so I came back especially to enjoy the show."
When I said nothing, he scoffed. "I told you long ago. The moment a werewolf of his status gets a chance to climb the ladder, the first thing he loses is his conscience."
"What do you know?" I shot to my feet, ready to argue. "At least he..."
"At least what?"
Leo stood as well, looming more than half a head above me and casting an oppressive shadow. "At least he stayed by your side and cared for you when you were sick? Or made you breakfast?"
He suddenly caught my chin between his fingers, curiosity flickering in his eyes. "Emma, when did you get so cheap?"
I slapped his hand away, only to hear his next question. "So, how about marrying me?"
I clicked my tongue and rolled my eyes. "Why wouldn't I?"
Unlike me, Leo had no interest in his fated mate. He had rejected her outright the first time they met.
All these years, he had kept himself scrupulously unattached, without a single woman at his side. Marrying him would strengthen cooperation between our two packs. Why not?
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, Dad and Leo's father were chatting happily in the garden.
I stared at the diamond tie pin on Leo's tie and folded my arms. "I want the wedding of the century, with every media outlet invited."
He raised a brow and smiled. "Anything else?"
I looked him straight in the eyes and enunciated every word. "On our wedding day, I want Daniel to watch Vivian's company go bankrupt."
Leo burst out laughing and ruffled my hair. "Now that's the Emma I know."
