“The head gasket blew,” Daddy told mom on the phone. “No. I made sure all the fluids were topped up before I left. This isn’t neglect on Leah’s part.” He handed me his credit card and nodded toward the check-in desk. I went over and checked us in, but had to wave him over to show his ID and sign since it was his credit card. I was glad he was distracted by bickering with mom so the woman behind the desk didn’t try to tell us about our room. She handed us two credit card style room keys and wrote down the room number on a little envelope she slipped them into. “Imagine if she had made this trek alone… yes of course she would have survived, but it was over a hundred degrees and if she had a safe car, that never would have happened,” Daddy whispered yelled as we walked to the elevator
