I finally release his hand just as Mom opens the door to the garage, letting light pour in. “I thought I heard the garage door open,” she says. “We had to finish listening to that song,” Daddy says as I hop out of the truck. “Did you get everything you needed for the plumbing situation?” Mom asks. “Mostly, I think if I need something else, I can find it here.” I’m not sure if he’s talking about the house’s plumbing or mine. Mom turns and disappears back into the house. I look over to find Daddy licking his fingers clean. His gaze drills into mine as he does it. I swallow.
