* * * Laylah watched the great expanse of the Pacific Ocean. She and Zahra had never parted ways since their childhood and the thought that there was now an entire ocean separating them saddened her. They had always been close; they were the Bonnie and Clyde—together in everything they ever did. It was true that she was the most enthusiastic one in their friendship and oftentimes managed to rope Zahra into her wild plans; without Zahra the great adventure now seemed bleak. Of course she knew that it was best for both of them to be separated but that doesn’t mean Laylah liked it. She was very close to breaking free off Raul’s arms to chase after Zahra when they departed from the coast of New York. It was the very reason they had both agreed not to speak to each other during this period
