Victor Langdon

In the large mansion, Victor Langdon paced back and forth across the marble floors, anxiety creasing his handsome face. His mother Estelle sat nearby, worry clouding her usually cheerful emerald eyes. "Son, please try to stay calm," Estelle soothed. "I'm certain we'll hear news about Eva soon." Victor raked a hand through his dark hair in frustration. "It's been three days since her accident, Mother. The not knowing is torture." His voice dropped to a pained whisper. "What if she doesn't make it?" Estelle rose to grasp her son's shoulders. "Have faith. Our Eva Jones is a fighter. If she survived the initial crash, I believe with all my heart she will return to us." Just then, Victor's phone vibrated. Snatching it up hastily, his pulse leapt at the name. "Yes, Dr. Stevens?" The Langdon family physician spoke briskly. "I have an update on Eva Jones' status. She regained consciousness a few hours ago." "Thank God," Victor breathed. His taut muscles unknotted in relief. The moment Victor ended the call with Dr. Stevens, he strode decisively toward the apartment's front door. Estelle hurried after him. "Victor, what are you doing?" He paused only long enough to shoot her a tense look. "I'm going to see Eva." "But the doctor said to be patient..." Estelle protested feebly. Still, she understood that wild glint in her son's stormy eyes. After days of tormenting helplessness, he required action. "I can't wait another minute," Victor declared, his jaw set stubbornly. "I need to be with my fiancée." He strode decisively toward the mansion's front door. Estelle hurried after him. "Victor, what are you doing?" He paused only long enough to shoot her a tense look. "I'm going to see Eva." Estelle watched him depart, anxiety and empathy warring within her. She could only pray that somehow, Victor might pierce through the shroud enshrouding Eva's memories. Perhaps that steadfast love could turn the key to unlock what medicine had thus far failed to restore. Inside the Bentley as his driver sped toward the hospital, Victor brooded in ominous silence. Anger simmered at the injustice of the vibrant, radiant woman he adored now rendered a stranger to her own identity. He should have been there when she first awakened, should never have left her side at all these torturous days. Instead others had usurped the privilege of welcoming back to consciousness the woman he had tenderly built dreams and promises with over three treasured years together. It cut him to the core. As the hospital's stark facade rose into view, Victor steeled himself. He would reclaim his place as her devoted partner against whatever unknown trials still awaited them. And he silently vowed that through the power of unrelenting love, he would help lead Eva back to herself once more - no matter how long that arduous journey took. And he silently vowed that through the power of unrelenting love, he would help lead Eva back to herself once more - no matter how long that arduous journey took. But anxiety still clenched his chest. "Her injuries...has she spoken yet? Does she remember..." He couldn't bring himself to finish. "It's still early, but Eva does have memory deficits I'm afraid," came the doctor's gentle reply. "Try to be patient while she heals." Victor slowly lowered the phone as Dr. Stevens ended the call. Estelle searched her son's face worriedly. "Well? Will Eva recover fully?" Victor managed a taut nod, his eyes fixed unseeingly ahead. "We must hope so." His hands curled into tight fists. "I should be at the hospital with my fiancée right now." Estelle laid a restraining hand on his arm. "Soon, my son..." Victor hurried down the hospital corridors until he spotted the Jones family conferring in a small group by Eva's room. He halted abruptly, ducking partially out of sight as resentment sparked through him at the sight of them clustered so closely together. There stood Sarah and Ted Jones, wearing matching pinched, worried expressions as Eva's sister Mia grasped their hands in reassurance. His upper lip curled scornfully. How easily they played the doting parental figures when mere days ago bitter acrimony had crackled between the Joneses and his beloved Eva over their strained family dynamics. Yet now tragedy and memory loss had conveniently exonerated them all. Victor glared from the shadows as Sarah Jones raised a tissue to dab her eyes while squeezing Eva's husband Henry in a sympathetic embrace. His fists clenched at the liberty these people so casually claimed with Eva compared to him—her actual long term romantic partner. Victor longed to stride forward and enter the hospital room legitimately to comfort Eva himself. But Dr. Stevens' prudent advice to introduce visitors gradually tempered his desire to assert his presence and rights regarding Eva. Still, observing this scene churned his gut, offending his every instinct to shelter Eva from further stress or discomfort during her recovery. For now he could only seethe helplessly, counting the minutes until he could properly see and care for his injured love at last. Soon he would help Eva distinguish less opportunistic allies from fair weather friends currently clamoring to anchor themselves by her side.
