Morning came too quickly.
Elena woke to the faint glow of sunlight spilling through her window, soft and golden against the wooden floor. For a moment, she didn’t move. She simply lay there, staring at the unfamiliar ceiling, trying to piece together the events of the night before.
The forest.
The bond.
Him.
Her chest tightened slightly as the memory of Damon’s eyes flashed in her mind—intense, unreadable, and far too aware of her.
Mate.
The word felt heavy, like something she wasn’t ready to carry.
Slowly, she pushed herself up, her movements quiet as always. The room was still, peaceful in a way she wasn’t used to. No whispers. No judging eyes. Just silence.
But even in that silence… she could feel it.
The bond hadn’t faded.
It lingered, softer now, like a thread stretching between her and something distant. She placed a hand over her chest, frowning slightly.
He was awake.
She didn’t know how she knew—but she did.
A faint emotion brushed against her again.
Focused.
Alert.
Different from the frustration of last night.
Elena exhaled slowly, pulling her knees closer as she sat on the bed. This connection… it wasn’t normal. It felt deeper than anything she had heard others describe.
And it scared her.
A sudden knock on the door broke her thoughts.
Elena stiffened.
“Can I come in?” Lucas’s voice came from the other side.
She hesitated before walking over and opening the door.
Lucas stood there, holding a tray of food. “Figured you might be hungry.”
Elena blinked in surprise.
He smiled slightly. “You didn’t come down for breakfast, so I brought it to you.”
She stepped aside, allowing him in.
“Hope you don’t mind,” he added as he placed the tray on the desk. “I wasn’t sure what you liked, so I just grabbed a bit of everything.”
Elena walked closer, her eyes scanning the food—bread, eggs, fruit, and a cup of tea. It was more than she was used to.
She looked at him and gave a small nod.
“You’re welcome,” he said lightly, catching on quickly.
There was a brief silence before he leaned against the desk, studying her.
“So,” he said, “how are you holding up?”
Elena hesitated.
How could she answer that?
Instead, she moved to the desk, picked up a small notepad lying there, and wrote quickly.
I’m fine.
Lucas glanced at the words, then back at her. “You don’t look fine.”
She paused… then wrote again.
I’m trying.
He nodded slowly. “That makes more sense.”
Elena gave a faint, almost invisible smile.
Lucas noticed it, and something softened in his expression. “You know, you don’t have to face everything alone here.”
Her smile faded slightly.
She wasn’t sure that was true.
Before either of them could say more, a sudden wave of emotion hit her.
Sharp.
Strong.
Demanding.
Elena’s hand froze over the page.
Her breathing quickened.
Lucas straightened. “What is it?”
She shook her head slightly, but her eyes widened.
The bond.
It surged again—stronger than before.
And this time, it wasn’t just a feeling.
It was a command.
Come.
Elena stepped back, the pen slipping from her fingers.
“Hey—” Lucas started, but she was already moving.
Out the door.
Down the hallway.
Lucas followed quickly behind her. “Elena, wait!”
But she couldn’t.
The pull was too strong.
—
Damon stood in the training grounds, his arms crossed as he watched the younger wolves spar.
His expression was calm, but his mind wasn’t.
He hadn’t slept.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her.
Felt her.
That quiet presence that somehow unsettled him more than any enemy ever had.
It made no sense.
He was the Alpha.
He controlled his instincts—not the other way around.
And yet…
The bond pulsed.
His head snapped up.
She was coming.
He turned just as Elena stepped into the training area, her breath uneven, her movements slightly rushed.
The wolves around them slowed, their attention shifting immediately.
Whispers began again.
Damon ignored them.
His focus was entirely on her.
She stopped a few feet away, her chest rising and falling as she tried to steady her breathing.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Damon took a step forward.
“You felt that,” he said.
Elena nodded.
Lucas arrived seconds later, slightly out of breath. “She just ran out of her room,” he explained.
Damon didn’t look at him. “I know.”
His eyes never left Elena.
There was something different about her now.
Something more… awake.
“Come with me,” he said.
Elena didn’t hesitate this time.
Lucas watched them go, his brows furrowing slightly.
—
Damon led her to a quieter part of the pack grounds, away from the others.
When they were alone, he turned to face her.
“Something’s happening,” he said. “This bond—it’s stronger than it should be.”
Elena listened, her gaze steady.
He stepped closer. “I need to know if you’re hiding something.”
Her eyes widened slightly.
Damon’s tone hardened. “Because this isn’t normal.”
Elena shook her head quickly.
She grabbed the notebook from his hand—he hadn’t even realized he was still holding it—and wrote fast.
I don’t understand it either.
He read the words, his jaw tightening.
“Then why does it feel like you do?” he asked.
She froze.
Because part of her did.
Not consciously.
Not clearly.
But something deep inside her… recognized this.
Before she could respond, another surge hit her.
Stronger.
Overwhelming.
Elena gasped, her body swaying slightly.
Damon reacted instantly, reaching out and catching her before she could fall.
The moment their skin touched—
Everything exploded.
Images.
Voices.
Power.
Elena’s eyes widened as something inside her finally broke free.
And for the first time—
The silence in her world… cracked.
