Chapter 8: The TainchelKATE STARED AT THE MONITOR in Jonas’s office. The video showed dark woods, the lighting surreal, obviously taken via a nightscope. The date displayed in the lower right was from seventeen years ago. Men in camouflage fatigues and holding rifles moved silently through the trees, the only sounds the soft breathing of the cameraman and the occasional snap of a branch underfoot. Suddenly, a feral snarl filled the room, followed by a man’s scream. The camera jerked, and she caught a glimpse of gray four-legged shapes leaping from the shadows. More screams and snarls. Then an even louder roar from right beside the camera. The ground rushed up. The picture bounced, settled. The screen now showed a perspective from the camera lying sideways on a leaf-strewn forest floor. T
