AcknowledgementsAlthough this is a work of fiction, it takes place in our modern world and I needed the help of many people to ensure that I got the important things right. I’d like to thank those people here. Thanks to Chief Anita Stephens of the Chapleau Ojibwe First Nation, as well as her mother, Theresa, for their hospitality at the Blue Heron Inn and for their help with my questions on Ojibwe stories, traditions, and culture. Thanks to Monica Bodirsky, History Program Coordinator/Editor at the The Native Canadian Centre of Toronto, for her help answering my many questions on Ojibwe spiritual beliefs, ceremonies, and traditions. Thanks to Constable Marshall Canning for his tour of the Chapleau OPP premises and for his assistance with police procedures and how the OPP operates in a small northern town, and to Margaret Coulter, Senior Constable, Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service, Chapleau Ojibwe Detachment, for her help on First Nations police forces. Thanks to Mayor Earle J. Freeborn of Chapleau for his insights into a small northern community, and to Cam Robitaille for acting as my guide into the bush and helping me get the flora, fauna, and weather right. Thanks to Dr. Douglas P. Lyle, MD (“The Writers Medical and Forensic Lab” h***:://www.dplylemd.com) for answering my questions on DNA sampling and testing, and to Bob Yap of Ontario Power Generation for his help with hydroelectric dams. If there is anything that I have wrong in this book on any of the above topics, the fault lies with me and not with any of these people who were so generous with their time and help. Thanks also to Candas Jane Dorsey and Sandra Kasturi for their editorial input to the first draft. Finally, thanks to Charles de Lint for his wonderful introduction and for his encouragement throughout.
