Chapter 4

The aftermath of that kiss lingered like the scent of rain-soaked earth—potent and inescapable. I lay awake that night, staring at the ceiling, every nerve in my body still humming with the memory of his touch. Why didn’t he take me right then and there? I knew he wanted to. I wanted him to. Nyra was silent, her usual taunts replaced by a quiet satisfaction that unnerved me more than her sharp words ever had. “You’re losing yourself,” I whispered into the darkness, unsure if I was speaking to her or to myself. The moonlight streaming through the window cast long shadows across my room, and with each passing hour, the weight of what I had done pressed down on me. Darius wasn’t supposed to be a part of my story. He was a complication—a distraction from the carefully laid plan I was crafting. The next morning, the pack was abuzz with rumors of the rogue attack and our victory. Whispers of Darius’s prowess and the strength of the warriors filled the air, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that eyes were following me, watching for a slip or a tell that might betray the chaos inside me. Celeste was among the most observant, her gaze sharp and piercing as I moved through the packhouse. Her possessive nature clung to her like a second skin, and it was clear she wasn’t blind to the shift in Darius’s attention. “You seem… distracted,” she said when we crossed paths in the hall, her tone laced with feigned concern. I raised an eyebrow, unwilling to rise to her bait. “And you seem desperate.” Her nostrils flared, but she quickly masked her irritation with a tight smile. “Be careful, Lila. Playing with fire has a way of burning those who think they can control it.” I leaned in closer, lowering my voice. “Then maybe you should keep your distance.” Her jaw tightened, but before she could respond, the sound of approaching footsteps caught our attention. Darius appeared at the end of the hallway, his commanding presence enough to silence whatever venom Celeste had been preparing to spit out at me. His eyes met mine, and the air seemed to shift, charged with an unspoken tension that neither of us could deny. “Lila,” he said, his voice steady but firm. “A word.” Celeste’s gaze darted between us, her expression a mixture of suspicion and resentment. But she said nothing as Darius gestured for me to follow him. The silence between us was heavy, stretching like a taut string ready to snap. We walked without speaking, the shadows of the forest growing deeper with every step. When we reached the edge, where the trees rose like sentinels guarding a forbidden truth, he stopped abruptly. The air shifted, charged with an unspoken tension, and he turned to face me. I could feel the storm brewing in his eyes, a tempest of emotions ready to spill. I braced myself, but nothing could prepare me for the weight of his voice, low and raw with conviction. “What happened last night,” he said, each word deliberate, “wasn’t a mistake.” My arms folded across my chest, a feeble shield against the fire in his gaze. “I never said it was.” His jaw tightened, and for a moment, I saw the wolf in him, wild and restless. “Then stop pretending it didn’t matter.” I held my ground, though my voice betrayed me with its brittle edge. “Maybe it didn’t.” The words tasted bitter, a lie I couldn’t swallow. He stepped closer, the heat of him wrapping around me, suffocating yet intoxicating. “You’re lying,” he said, his voice a growl, cutting through every defense I had left. I opened my mouth to deny it, but the intensity of his gaze pinned me in place, stripping away my pretense. He knew. He always knew. “This,” he said, his voice softening like the first rays of dawn after a long night, “this thing between us… it’s more than either of us ever planned for. But I need to know—are you going to keep running from it?” My heart pounded, my mind a whirlwind of fear and longing. Every instinct screamed at me to flee, to bury myself in the safety of my plans, my vengeance. Yet, the pull of him was undeniable, a gravity I couldn’t escape. “I don’t know how to stop,” I whispered, the truth slipping free like a secret I could no longer keep. His hand rose, fingers brushing my cheek with a tenderness that unraveled me. “You don’t need to run from me. Give in to us.” he murmured, his voice a promise, a plea. In that moment, the chaos within me stilled. The fortress I had built around my heart began to crumble, each crack letting in the light I had shut out for so long. Nyra, my wolf, was restless, the bond with Darius something she couldn’t ignore. She wanted him, needed him in ways I could never fully comprehend. It was as if the touch of his hand, the heat of his breath, had awakened something in me I didn’t want to acknowledge. Ethan and Celeste had torn apart everything I thought I knew about love, about loyalty. Now, I had found something unexpected in Darius—a man who was willing to hold me, even when my heart was broken, even when my motives were as dark as the night.
