Chapter 8

The tension in the packhouse simmered like a storm cloud, heavy and oppressive. Rumors about me and Darius had spread like wildfire, fanned by whispers and stolen glances. I’d tried to keep my distance, to ignore the growing tide of speculation, but it was impossible to remain invisible when the wolves around me were so keen to find cracks in their Alpha’s armor. It wasn’t long before the confrontation came again. I was walking toward the training grounds, hoping the rigorous drills might clear my head, when Ethan’s voice stopped me cold. “Lila.” I turned slowly, my stomach knotting as I faced him. His expression was a mix of anger and something else—hurt, maybe. His blue eyes were shadowed, and there was a tightness around his mouth that spoke of sleepless nights. “Ethan,” I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil within me. He closed the distance between us in a few long strides, his broad shoulders stiff with tension. My heart skipped a beat, but I didn’t flinch. “I don’t owe you an explanation.” I said quickly, before he could even bring it up. I already knew what this was about. His jaw clenched. “So it is true.” I crossed my arms, meeting his gaze head-on. “What does it matter to you, Ethan? You made your choice.” A flicker of guilt crossed his face once more, but it was quickly replaced by frustration. “This isn’t about Celeste. This is about you and Darius. He’s using you, Lila. He doesn’t care about anyone but himself.” I laughed, though there was no humor in it. “And you’re so selfless, are you? You don’t get to stand here and lecture me about choices when you’ve made it clear where your loyalty lies.” Ethan’s fists clenched at his sides, his voice lowering dangerously. “He’s manipulating you. He always does this—he takes what he wants without thinking about the consequences.” The sound of approaching footsteps cut through the tension, and both of us turned to see Darius striding toward us. His expression was unreadable, but his presence was enough to make Ethan take a step back. “What’s going on here?” Darius’s voice was calm, but there was an undercurrent of authority that made the air feel heavier. Ethan glared at him, his face a mask of barely restrained anger. “I’m trying to talk some sense into her before you ruin her life like you’ve ruined everyone else’s.” Darius’s eyes darkened, his wolf simmering beneath the surface. “That’s enough, Ethan.” “You can’t just—” Ethan began, but Darius cut him off with a low growl. “I said, that’s enough.” His tone left no room for argument. Ethan’s hands curled into fists, but he didn’t press further. Instead, he shot me one last look, filled with frustration and something almost like desperation, before storming off. Darius watched him go, his shoulders tense. When he turned back to me, his gaze softened. “Are you all right?” I nodded, though my throat felt tight. “I can handle Ethan.” “I know you can,” he said quietly. “But you shouldn’t have to.” I opened my mouth to respond, but the words caught in my throat. There was so much I wanted to say, so much I didn’t know how to express. Instead, I simply nodded and turned away, heading toward the training grounds. By the time I returned to the packhouse, the sun was sinking low in the sky, casting long shadows across the ground. The day’s training had left me sore and exhausted, but it hadn’t dulled the edge of my emotions. As I walked through the halls, I caught sight of Celeste lingering near the main staircase. She spotted me and immediately made her way over, her expression sharp. “Lila,” she said sweetly, though her tone dripped with malice. “A word?” I didn’t stop walking, but she kept pace beside me. “What do you want, Celeste?” Her smile faltered, but she quickly recovered. “I just wanted to warn you. Getting involved with Darius is... dangerous. He’s not the kind of man who offers happy endings.” I stopped abruptly, turning to face her. “And you care because...?” Her expression hardened, and the mask of politeness slipped. “Because if you think you can waltz in here and take what isn’t yours, you’re sorely mistaken. I won’t let you.” “What exactly isn’t mine?” I asked, my voice cold. “Everything,” she hissed, her eyes narrowing. “The pack, the title, the power—it’s all beyond you. You don’t belong here, and you never will.” Her words stung, but I refused to let her see it. “Is that what this is about? You’re afraid I’ll take something you think belongs to you? Like you did with Ethan?” Celeste’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, I thought she might lash out. But instead, she composed herself, smoothing her hair and flashing a saccharine smile. “Consider this a friendly warning, Lila. Stay away from Darius, or you’ll regret it.” With that, she turned on her heel and walked away, her heels clicking against the polished floor. I stood there for a moment, my chest heaving with suppressed anger. Celeste might think she could intimidate me, but I wasn’t about to back down. Whatever game she was playing, I was ready for it.
