The moon hung low in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the packhouse courtyard. The tension of the past weeks had built to a crescendo, and I could feel the weight of every rumor, every stolen glance, pressing down on me. Yet, none of it seemed to matter anymore.
Not when Darius was standing in front of me.
We were alone under the stars, the rest of the pack gathered inside for the evening. His dark eyes locked onto mine, filled with a depth of emotion I wasn’t sure I could trust—but couldn’t resist.
“Lila,” he said, his voice a low rumble. “You’ve been on my mind since the moment you arrived. I know this is complicated. I know it’s not what you expected. But I can’t keep pretending I don’t feel anything for you.”
I swallowed hard, my heart racing. “Darius, if we do this—if we acknowledge what’s between us—there’s no going back. The pack will talk. Celeste will—”
“I don’t care what anyone thinks,” he interrupted, his tone firm. He stepped closer, the space between us shrinking until I could feel the heat of his body. “Let them talk. Let Celeste scheme. None of it matters if you’re by my side.”
His words were like a balm to my fractured heart, soothing wounds I hadn’t realized were still raw. For so long, I’d fought this connection, telling myself it was nothing more than lust, a distraction. But deep down, I’d known the truth: Darius wasn’t just a part of my life now. He was the center of it.
“Darius...” I began, my voice trembling.
He reached out, cupping my face in his large hands. His touch was surprisingly gentle, and I leaned into it without thinking. “I’ve never felt this way before,” he admitted. “You make me feel alive in a way I didn’t think was possible. I know I’ve made mistakes—I’ve hurt people—but with you, I want to be better.”
Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, and I blinked them away, refusing to let my emotions get the better of me. “You scare me, Darius,” I confessed. “The way you make me feel... it’s overwhelming.”
“You think I’m not scared too?” he asked, his voice softening. “Every instinct I have tells me to protect you, to keep you safe. But I can’t do that if you’re holding back. I need you to trust me, Lila.”
I searched his eyes, looking for any hint of deception, but all I saw was sincerity. The walls I’d built around my heart began to crumble, and for the first time, I allowed myself to imagine what it might be like to let him in completely.
“I do trust you,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
His lips curved into a small, relieved smile. “Then be with me. Not in secret, not in the shadows. Let’s face the pack together.”
The weight of his words settled over me, but instead of fear, I felt a strange sense of peace. Being with Darius was a risk, but it was one I was finally willing to take.
I nodded, a small but decisive gesture. “Okay.”
His smile widened, and before I could say anything else, he pulled me into his arms, his lips capturing mine in a kiss that left no room for doubt. It was a kiss of promise, of passion, of a new beginning.
The announcement came the next evening, during the pack’s weekly gathering in the great hall. The air was thick with anticipation as Darius and I stood side by side at the front of the room. Whispers rippled through the crowd, the curiosity and speculation palpable.
Darius raised a hand, silencing the room with the commanding presence only an Alpha could wield. “I have something to say,” he began, his voice strong and steady. “For weeks, there have been rumors about my relationship with Lila. I’m here to set the record straight.”
He glanced at me, his expression softening. “Lila and I are together. She’s my mate in every way that matters, and I won’t let anyone challenge that. If you have a problem with it, you come to me—not her.”
The room erupted into murmurs, the pack’s reactions ranging from shock to tentative approval. I stood tall beside him, my hand slipping into his. The small gesture spoke volumes, a silent show of unity that didn’t go unnoticed.
Celeste’s face stood out among the crowd, her expression a mix of anger and disbelief. For a moment, our eyes met, and I saw the storm brewing behind her flawless exterior. But I didn’t look away. This was my place now, and I wouldn’t let her—or anyone—push me out.
As the murmurs died down, Darius’s voice rang out again. “This pack has faced countless challenges, but we’ve always come out stronger because we stand together. That won’t change. I expect each of you to respect Lila as you would me.”
There was a beat of silence before the room erupted into applause. Some of it was hesitant, but most of it was genuine. The pack might have been surprised, but Darius’s authority was absolute, and they trusted him.
When the gathering dispersed, Darius turned to me, his hand still holding mine. “Are you ready for this?”
I smiled, feeling lighter than I had in weeks. “I think I am.”
