Chapter 10

The night of the full moon had arrived, and the packhouse hummed with excitement and preparation. Tonight, Darius and I would formalize our bond before the pack, marking the start of our journey as Alpha and Luna. The ceremony, steeped in centuries of tradition, would solidify our connection not only to each other but to the pack itself. I stood in my room, gazing at my reflection in the mirror. The white dress I wore shimmered like moonlight, its intricate embroidery catching the soft glow of the lanterns. My hair was swept back, adorned with delicate silver vines that matched the ceremonial necklace resting against my collarbone—a gift from the elders, symbolizing wisdom and strength. Nyra stirred within me, her excitement palpable. “We were meant for this,” she whispered. “You were meant for this.” A knock at the door broke my reverie. Cecily, one of the pack’s younger members, poked her head in, her wide eyes filled with awe. “Lila, it’s time. Everyone’s waiting.” I nodded, my heart pounding as I followed her down the hallway and out into the courtyard, where the ceremony would take place. The clearing was transformed into a sacred space, lit by the soft glow of torches and the silver light of the full moon. The pack stood in a wide circle, their eyes filled with anticipation. At the center of the clearing stood Darius. He wore a black shirt trimmed with the deep crimson of the pack’s colors, his broad shoulders radiating strength and authority. His eyes found mine as I approached, and for a moment, the rest of the world faded away. He reached out his hand, and I took it, feeling the warmth of his touch steady my nerves. Elder Miriam, the shaman of the pack, stepped forward, her voice resonating with an otherworldly power. “Tonight, under the watchful eye of the Moon Goddess, we gather to witness the union of our Alpha and his destined Luna. This bond is sacred, a merging of souls that will guide and protect this pack for generations to come.” The pack murmured their agreement, and Miriam raised her hands to the sky, chanting an ancient invocation. The air seemed to hum with energy, the power of the Moon Goddess wrapping around us like a protective shroud. “Lila Kane,” Miriam said, her gaze piercing. “Do you accept Darius Vale as your mate, your Alpha, and your partner in leading this pack?” I swallowed hard, my voice steady despite the emotion threatening to overwhelm me. “I do.” “And Darius Vale,” Miriam continued, turning to him. “Do you accept Lila Kane as your mate, your Luna, and your partner in leading this pack?” “I do,” Darius said without hesitation, his voice filled with conviction. Miriam smiled, her weathered face softening. “Then mark each other, and let your bond be sealed.” Darius turned to me, his hands cradling my face as he leaned closer. “This will hurt,” he whispered, his tone gentle but firm. “I’m ready,” I replied, tilting my head to expose my neck. His eyes darkened, his wolf rising to the surface as he bit down gently but firmly, his teeth sinking into the skin where my neck met my shoulder. Pain flared, sharp and brief, but it was quickly replaced by a wave of warmth and euphoria as the bond solidified. I gasped, the connection between us growing stronger, more tangible. When he pulled back, I saw the faint shimmer of silver in his eyes—a reflection of our completed bond. It was my turn now. I placed my hands on his shoulders, my wolf lending me strength as I bit down, marking him as mine. The moment I did, a surge of power flowed between us, uniting us in a way that went beyond words. The pack erupted into a howl, their voices rising in unison as the bond was sealed. The sound was primal, a declaration of unity and celebration that echoed into the night. Miriam stepped forward again, holding a ceremonial pendant crafted from silver and moonstone. She placed it around my neck, her voice strong and clear. “Lila Kane, by the will of the Moon Goddess and the strength of your bond, I name you Luna of the Moonlit Forest Pack.” Applause broke out, and the pack members approached to offer their congratulations, their smiles warm and genuine. Despite the initial resistance some had shown, it was clear they were ready to accept me as their Luna. Darius and I stood side by side, our hands intertwined as the celebration began. Tables laden with food and drink appeared, and music filled the air as the pack danced and laughed under the moonlight. For the first time in years, I felt like I truly belonged, not just as Darius’s mate, but as a part of something larger than myself. As the night wore on, Darius pulled me aside, leading me to a quiet corner of the clearing. “You were incredible tonight,” he said, his voice filled with pride. I smiled, leaning into him. “So were you.” He cupped my cheek, his eyes softening. “This is just the beginning, Lila. Together, we can face anything.” The days following the bonding ceremony were a whirlwind of change, excitement, and challenges. Being officially recognized as the Luna of the Moonlit Forest Pack meant my responsibilities had increased tenfold. Yet, every task and decision I made felt lighter with Darius by my side. Despite the joy of our union, the pack still reeled from the recent rogue attacks. Security measures were heightened, warriors trained harder, and Darius spent long hours strategizing with his Beta and the other leaders. While I attended to my duties—helping with injured pack members, resolving disputes, and learning the intricate politics of pack life—I couldn’t ignore the underlying tension that simmered within our territory. By now it was clear that the rogues weren’t acting alone. One afternoon, as the sun cast long shadows over the training grounds, I found myself watching the warriors spar. Their movements were precise, their focus intense. My wolf, Nyra, stirred restlessly. “We should be out there with them,” she urged. “Soon,” I promised, though I couldn’t help but smile at her eagerness. “Enjoying the show?” I turned to find Darius standing beside me, his presence commanding as always. He wore a simple black shirt and jeans, but the way he carried himself made even the most unassuming outfit seem regal. “I was just thinking about joining them,” I said, meeting his amused gaze. “Were you?” He crossed his arms, a playful smirk tugging at his lips. “You do realize they’ll go easy on you, Luna or not.” “Then I’ll just have to show them why they shouldn’t.” He chuckled, the sound deep and rich. “That, I’d like to see.” Moments later, I was in the sparring ring, facing off against one of the pack’s seasoned warriors. His name was Marcus—a broad-shouldered, no-nonsense fighter who’d been skeptical of me from the start. “Ready, Luna?” he asked, his tone respectful but teasing. “Always,” I replied, dropping into a fighting stance. The first few blows were light, more of a test than a true challenge. But as the match progressed, Marcus began to push harder, his strikes faster and more deliberate. I dodged and countered with precision, my training and Nyra’s instincts guiding me. When I finally landed a solid hit, knocking Marcus off balance, the crowd that had gathered erupted in cheers. “Well done,” Marcus said, offering me a grin as he picked himself up. “You weren’t holding back, were you?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. “Not after the first minute,” he admitted, wiping sweat from his brow. “You’re stronger than you look, Luna.” “Good,” I said, smiling as I stepped out of the ring. Darius was waiting, his expression a mixture of pride and amusement. “You’ve won them over,” he said as we walked back toward the packhouse. “Not all of them,” I replied, thinking of Celeste and the others who still viewed me as an outsider. “They’ll come around,” he said, his voice firm. “You’ve already proven more than they expected. The rest will follow in time.” I nodded, grateful for his unwavering support. Later that evening, as we sat together in his office, pouring over reports on rogue activity, a knock sounded at the door. “Come in,” Darius called, his tone sharp. It was Ethan, his son, and the tension in the room thickened instantly. “What is it?” Darius asked, his voice cool. “I have information,” Ethan said, stepping inside. His gaze flicked to me briefly before returning to his father. “About the rogues.” Darius leaned forward, his interest piqued. “Go on.” Ethan hesitated, his jaw tightening. “I overheard one of them talking about a leader. Someone pulling the strings from the shadows. They called him the ‘Phantom Alpha.’” A chill ran down my spine at the name, and I exchanged a glance with Darius. “Do you know anything else?” Darius pressed. “No, but if they’re organized enough to have a leader, this is bigger than we thought,” Ethan said. Darius nodded, his expression grim. “Good work. Keep listening. Report anything else you find.” Ethan gave a curt nod before leaving the room, but not before casting one more glance my way. As the door closed, Darius turned to me, his brow furrowed. “The Phantom Alpha,” he muttered. “I’ve heard whispers before, but nothing concrete.” “Do you think he’s real?” I asked. “I don’t know,” Darius admitted. “But if he is, we need to find him before he can strike again.” The weight of his words settled over us like a dark cloud. The celebration of our bond was behind us, but the true challenges of our union—and our leadership—were just beginning.
