Chapter 6
I took a look inside the dark window. I couldn't see much in there which could either mean there were no other big exits or the inside was way bigger than it seemed.
I felt around on the sides of the broken window. THERE! Blood in one corner, still wet.
She crawled in here. I backed two steps and looked around. Planks and borders were lying on the ground probably covered the window earlier so I put them in the window corner balancing and carefully put the shards underneath so if she tried getting out there we would hear the plank falling, the glass underneath would make noise when either she or the plank hit there.
I continued to walk around the building on one side looking carefully if I could see more exits or broken windows that looked like it fit this part of the concrete building.
After seeing nothing that looked like it could be used to get out I went the other side.
I heard the other team enter the alley a bit back. I pressed myself against the wall in the darkness.
They walked quietly and carefully with Frank first and then Chian with David bringing up their rear. They passed me and I smirked. Suddenly David just stopped and said loudly “comeon little shadow we have a tiger to catch” I stepped out behind them “she's a tiger?”
Frank and Chian made a sound of surprise. “where on earth did you come from?!”.
I ignored them and jogged to David's side as he started to walk again keeping his eyes on the area around us for surprises.
“Yes a Siberian tiger, I don´t know how much she can change and what she has except for some fur and claws. “Her eyesight might change too since she´s choosing to hide in the dark” I said.
He nodded “She has russian heritage so a siberian fits her well”.
We met up with Robert and I showed them where the window was.
“There is no visible exit other than this and she won´t come out without a fight.” I said “If we go in there she will probably be able to do quite some damage to us in tight corners and darkness.
The best strategy is to lure her out” I looked at David. “I think I´m the best choice. I'm fast and know what to look for. I can also defend myself until you arrive to rescue me poo bear” I gave him an innocent smile and fluttered my eyelashes. He nodded and looked at the others.
“do NOT shoot. you have a bigger chance of shooting me or her rather than her.” David said.
“Also!” I added with a finger in the air “We are planning to take her alive. NOT kill her”.
The whole group with the exception of David looked at me like I was crazy.
“That's not possible, she´ll kill you if you even try! “Suicide!” “What for? Only so they can die in jail?” They all said at the same time.
I Stared at David. Let's make a plan then you need to change.
And so we did.
10min later we were all in position except me. I turned to David. “alright you can change now”.
I carefully placed myself between him and the others. He relaxed a moment then his eyes turned darker brown, harms grew giant paws and claws spread out from his fingertips. The bones cracked and snapped in a painful sound, while fur sprouted from his skin. It all happened very fast while I kept my eyes on the team. They looked like they had never seen or heard anything that horrible (which I must agree with, that popping sound of bones sends shivers up my spine) with faces white as sheets.
But to their credit none of them put their hand on their gun even though i'm sure they itched for it.
When he was in full bear form he took a couple of deep breaths and then cleared his nostrils with a snort. He looked my way. He was beautiful.
One of the training days he had stopped me and said “I think you need to see me in my complete bear form. Even though it takes quite some energy to do it you need to know what to expect, recognise how I look in my other form is probably the most important one.” He smiled. “Can't have you shoot me and then go “ooups”.” I blinked at him. Looking all cocky but I was eager to find out what he looked like. I recognised him because of his beautiful green eyes when I was a bit out of it. when I got attacked and halfway to unconsciousness I had no doubts who it was, which was strange but he seemed to have a strange pull on me.
But to truly see the change with my own eyes… that has to be a special experience.
It was. The moving and cracking of bones and muscles made me feel sick, he looked like he was in enormous pain and I can see why this moment is probably one of his most vulnerable moments because I don't think he can protect himself like that.
I had seen him drawing out his claws and extra fur on his arm in a partial shift but that didn't seem to be as painful as this, and that took just moments to do.
This took a little bit longer but to him it probably seemed to take forever.
When he was finally done he shook himself off and then turned to me. Later he told me that it took a moment to gather himself when he changed because they blacked out most of the pain because it was just too much to handle otherwise, kind of like women do with childbirth, no one really remembers the exact amount of pain afterwards. Nature probably made it like that to make sure the survival of the species and it would´t have to have people be afraid of their more animal self that they´re turning into.
He was very much bigger than me, thicker with lots of fur, his beautiful green eyes was just like his human ones. The colour of his fur was a mix of red and brown. A little bit of his red hair i guess. His paws were like three of mine combined at least, not counting the big claws that were probably my whole hand long.
With that amount of muscle he was surely more deadly than much else.
I came back to myself with a snap and thought I better focus on this if i´m going to make it work.
He looked into my eyes and nodded. I nodded and looked over to the guys. “Ok DON'T shoot the bear, he is in control and will not attack you. I'm going now and If our little poohbear is not here for this part we´re screwed”.
I turned and crawled carefully inside the window. It was dark and damp in there. I stood still for a while to get used to the dark. Then I walked to the wall to my tight. With one hand on the wall I slowly walked further in the dark, one slow step at a time.
The plan was pretty simple, get inside. find her. run like hell and they should be outside cutting off her path a bit further away, and while they make to lure her to them, poohbear will sneak behind her and attack. The riskiest part is to be the bait inside this damp part of the house, if she caught me here I would be all on my own and completely screwed.
I got past two doorways until I finally heard something that made me freeze. a low sound, growl or pained sound I did´t know.
I walked a few steps more and bent down a bit, looked around me slowly in the dark and rested my weight on the front of my feet. ready to go on a moment's notice.
Then I saw it, two cold white eyes that met mine. It first blinked then I saw it lift a bit, an increased growl while the shadow around it got bigger. Oh man this was going to be hard.
She stared a bit at me, unsure what to do I guessed. I bet she was all kinds of confused.
So I did what i´m really good at , I smiled, grabbed a knife slowly from my belt said “cooome kittekittekitty” then I threw a knife right where I expected her to be if she sprung forward and turned to run the second i let the knife go. I heard it hit something but i doubted it was her. she had´t made any sound of pain but that was no guarantee.
I sprinted as fast as I could back to the window.
I took the first turn in a sprint grabbing the side corner to help me turn faster, as soon as I was gone from sight from the tiger I figured I had about two seconds to disappear before I was in her sights. I concentrated on making myself turn to smoke (I had good use of Davids and mine practise to make this happen in the middle of a run because I managed it within a second). I quickly sidestepped towards the wall on my right side but it turned out to be a room (lucky me!) so I ran in there and tried to slow my breathing as fast as possible. I heard her light footsteps stop right outside the room, she couldn´t know exactly where I was but if she was good enough she could use her nose and ears to track me.
I quickly looked up but everything was too dark for me to see much but.. THERE a shadow from a hanging ceiling lamp. I saw her looking around carefully, growling a bit. It should have sounded weird coming from a human throat but it was menacing enough to make me start to sweat. I stood still. She could´t see where I was but my heightened fear probably made her more sure where I was. She took one slow step inside, then another and I jumped in place once making a low “puff” sound then jumped up towards the ceiling light. She threw herself at me while i Jumped just narrowingly missing me while I grabbed onto the ceiling lamp and then swung over alexandra landing outside the room. I landed and rolled forward and up on my feet again only to bounce on the wall on the other side and run again towards the window. Sometime around this I had lost control over my magic and was probably not smoke anymore.
I bounced on the last wall close to the window. I felt her breath behind me closing in FAST.
I twirled with my second knife and threw it there without aiming, and twirled back almost without stopping. I heard a whine behind me but I jumped head first out the window like the floor was a trampoline.
I rolled on the other side of the window and cut my hand in some glass underneath. Damn! I had shoved some of it away earlier but apparently not all. I kept going. Aiming for the way we had come into the alley.
“DUCK!” I heard Chian shout in front of me. I reacted instantly and threw myself on the floor.
I saw Klas right next to Chian with gun up aiming.
I rolled to the side until I hit a wall. I heard shooting. I went up on hands and knees and looked behind me. Chian and Kian were shooting on the ground between me and a GIANT half tiger. She was barefoot with fur on her feet and legs. Razor Sharp claws sticking out on her fingers, Her thin and tall frame looked vicious with the torn parts of a dress still hanging from her arms and around her waist. blood splattered everywhere and especially around her mouth that had a couple really sharp teeth sticking out making her look a bit like a vampire. I couldn't tell what colour her hair was because it was so dirty and full of dried blood it just looked like a mess. But from her picture I knew it was supposed to be honey blonde. Her Eyes were milk white and angrily darted between where Chian and Klas stood and me. She had stopped and looked unsure of where to go and angry as hell.
I took out my gun, aimed and shot her in the upper leg. She was close enough that I didn't have any problem aiming.
She hissed at me and turned to run back into the darkness of the window she came from but right before she reached the window she got tackled from the side by a Giant bear.
Poobear to the rescue!
He rammed her so she landed on her side with him on top. He slammed his giant paw across her face and then roared a loud roar straight into her face. She froze and stared at him.
I could see something happening to her. David was plenty dominant and maybe not as alpha as his boss. But apparently he was enough alpha when he wanted to. I could see him stare angrily at her and hold her down with his giant paws. Staring at each other. I quickly looked at Chian and Klas to see where they were. But they had moved together with Robert and Frank and pulled up a net, and a tranquiliser. The tranquiliser might not do much more than make her a bit dizzy since her metabolism was way greater than a normal human being but every little bit helped.
I put myself between them and David just in case anyone of them would like to start trouble.
I looked back at Alexandra, tears started to go down her face but she kept her stare contest with David.
Eventually her claws and fur started to retract a bit. She looked less wild but just in case David stayed right where he was on top of her.
I signaled the others to move in. They did slowly and carefully, They injected the tranquilizer. David finally moved off but kept his paw on her chest. He still held her eyes with his. They put two handcuffs on her both on the legs and the hands. After that they put a net on top of her. That should give us enough warning before she tries to escape. I thought.
Then we called it all in and brought her to the van team 2 had arrived in.
When she was strapped in the back of the van David stopped me and looked me over slowly.
He had changed back right before we started toward the car.
Plenty of gawkers had gathered when we hauled her inside. Out in the light she really looked half dead with all the dirt and blood. She still had some claws out and her defeated look with blood and tears mixed on her face, she was quite a sight.
David had pants and shoes on again but no sweater and shirt, Glorious is what he looked but for once I was tired enough not to look (well except maybe a tiny peek, I was´t dead after all).
I had dirty clothes and some blood from a gash on my palm from the glass under that window, some scrapes on my knees but otherwise I was just very tired especially since the adrenaline rush was leaving me exhausted.
He looked me in the eye, I knew what he was wondering and I nodded and gave him a smile.
I was alright.
Part 2
We all except for Chian sat in the same van feeling the adrenaline drain out of us. Chian will get the other car back to the office.
We sat in silence for a bit then Klas asked me.
“are you one of them?”
“One of who?” I answered pretending to be oblivious.
“You know! A freak like them. Well are you?” snarled Frank and gave me a nasty snarl.
“I can't turn furry or claws or control any other kind of elements around us if that's what you mean but that doesn't stop me from being a “freak” as you so eloquently call it”. I answered looking straight at them (there! chew on that truth and see what you make of it).
“What are you planning to do now when we have caught a mutant? She killed at least two people after all”.
“You'll see,” I answered. Then took up my phone and texted Boris.
I told Robert to drive to the back of the police station next to a green van with a mermaid painted on the side (seriously, How tacky). When we got there Boris and his bodyguard waited outside I told everybody to go inside. as soon as they were inside I let the two people go into the van and grab Alexandra and threw her into their van.
She was still bloody here and she had passed out .. I think. Hoping like hell she had´t died.
Boris turned to me after he had managed to load her in.
“Good work, keep it up” He said with a toothy grin then jumping into his car to drive away. It felt more as an insult than a compliment with the almost ironic lilt in his words, but I couldn´t be sure.
David patted me on my shoulder and went to go with him.
“I need to give him my full report, I´ll see you tomorrow”.
And with that I was left to stand there by myself in the parking lot.
“Bleh, now to figure out how to write down my very first big report”.
I went inside to Ask Andrea for help. She ought to have something for me to use to figure out what kind of details I was supposed to put down.
Thank the gods the day was almost done!
It took me the rest of the day to manage all the paperwork. I not only had to report to my boss at WIP but also I had to write reports so I could get my knives back from the forensics team after they have finished looking through all the evidence.
After I changed clothes and shower off all the blood and dirt at the team shower, I felt better and more able to handle the paperwork.
When I got to my desk someone had put a new baguette filled with ham and cheese on a plate (Yay!). So I got to it. It was dark when I finally got done and went home. I got a day to rest up my scrapes and bruises. Unlike in movies people get sore and tired after things like this so in order to wait for the next one I got to rest up for a day or two.
Sure was quite sore the day after but after eating a giant brunch and binge watching Dexter, in my pajamas, I felt better. But no David the whole day made me feel strangely alone.
Two days later I was in our office, having gone through a talk about what happened with the group. David had to help me explain certain things that happened during that day like depending on how dominant a person was, he or she can calm down another person which is what he did when he roared in Alexandras face.
It's a trait from the animal kingdom that helps make the difference between prey and hunter also who takes care of who in a group of animals like lions and wolves.
For example a wolf that is more dominant than the other decides over the other but also has the responsibility of keeping that wolf safe.
This had nothing to do with female and male animals. That is just a silly thing that humans care about, females have a certain importance with some animals like, Lions.
But the female lion can still decide over the rest of the lions until she finds a male that she decides is dominant enough for her pride.
When David Roared in Alexandras face he was telling her to submit to the stronger mentality. Humans have these too, like how some people are just able to get other people to follow them without really doing much but most of the time we let our logic get in the way of trusting instincts such as these.
In older times people thought that a female had to follow the man's rules and income, also take care of that man so he could do the work that was needed for that household income, leaving the woman completely dependent upon the man and whatever he decides to do.
Therefore if the man had all the power, but the women who had enough dominance naturally usually ended as prey for other men's anger because they felt threatened.
Luckily that time is long past.
“So that means that if you roar in another mutant's face they will follow you?” Chian asked.
David laughed. “No, not really” I said. “As far as i've understood some really dominant people are able to through fear and anger use their dominance to bring out instinct to cower or follow.
I´m not at all sure if it´s the roar of if that's just an outlet to let the alpha in them show since it can work without a roar.
But if you want to temporarily shock somebody enough for them to take a minute to get your message across then that's probably the way to do it”. I smiled.
Chian looked impressed and he and Robert started to chat about what that could mean.
Boss Johansen had joined us in the discussion when we did a recap and when we started explaining this I could see some hope sparkle in his eyes.
“So you mean all we needed for this group to manage the murders was a big enough alpha and then they would stop?” He sounded a bit incredulous. But perhaps with all the murder and horrible things they had seen and done up to this point, all the loss of lives this group has endured might make this little detail… incredulous.
“All you need in general is to include mutants, people need to know how to get help for when they transform, how to get help when they feel threatened and maybe they could be calmed before the murders happen in general”.
I heard Frank scoff at the notion.
Johansen soon left us to continue to do our work with a thoughtful look on his face.
The rest of the week continued with short reports on this and that fight here and there.
But when we got there it was mostly to calm people down. I found that most of the time people really got upset when we detained mutants to try to prevent them from getting really upset. I was sure they thought they would never see that person again. From earlier records I can't really blame them.
None of this would have been possible without Davids influence. Most of them knew who David was and as soon as he stepped in to calm bystanders they looked to him and backed off, unsure but with trust in their eyes.
The detained mutant stopped fighting our team as soon as he showed himself.
Luckily I was as forgotten as usual so I could silently keep my eye on the surroundings and see peoples reactions. It served me very well.
Monday (6 days later) we came home into the office, ready to start a new day.
David behind me with his own cup of coffie.
I stopped cold right by my officedoor when I saw who stood next to boss Johansen right outside his office.
Thin, Tall and blonde.
Alexandra Hrabry.
To be continued ..
