CHAPTER TWO

1276 Words
I woke up in an unfamiliar room, and the smell of disinfectant tells me I'm in a hospital. A sound from beside me made me turn my head. I spotted a nurse in a blue scrub adjusting the drip that was connected to my arm. “Wha…how did I get here?” I asked as I attempted to sit up. The nurse stopped me from doing so immediately. “Don't move, you need to rest properly.” She said. Suddenly memories of what happened crashed into me. I immediately panicked and held the nurse’s hands “My baby, please tell me my baby is ok,” I said to her in fear, my eyes got watery at the thought of losing my child. “Yes, your baby is okay, although the fall could have severe consequences, but the child is out of danger. You need to be more careful since there's a high chance of getting a miscarriage in the first trimester,” She reported and I immediately felt relieved by the nurse's assurance. ‘My child is okay,’ I thought. Soon the nurse left and I was the only one in the ward. I planned to tell Darian about the child, he's the father, but I don't know if he will react in a good way. I thought about what happened two months ago at Bay Harbour. It was Stephanie’s graduation dinner and the party was held there. The server had given me a glass of juice since I don't drink alcohol and I couldn't remember what happened next. All I knew was that when I woke up, I was naked in a bed and had clearly been taken advantage of. It wasn't until yesterday morning that I overheard my stepbrother on the phone saying the man who was with me that day was Darian. I wonder why he pretended as if nothing had happened between us. Now Stephanie is saying she has convinced him that she was the one he slept with that night. The door to the ward opened, interrupting my thoughts, I looked up to see an angry Stephanie limp inside. She looked alright except for the limping. “What do you want?” I asked her, my voice cold. She almost made me lose my child, and I will not forgive her for that. “You're pregnant,” She stated and my eyes widened in alarm. “You're talking nonsense,” I said to her, turning my head away. Stephanie has always been unhinged with her attacks and I can't risk her knowing I'm pregnant, at least not until I can clear my name and then reveal the truth to Darian. “You are pregnant!” Her sharp voice almost made me deaf. I didn't respond to her. She immediately tried walking to me fast but fell due to her legs. Frustrated, she stood up and then took deep breaths. “Don't think you've won just because you're pregnant, Darian will never believe that the child is his, he'll probably think you're whoring around and that's how you got pregnant. And trust me I'll make sure he thinks exactly like that,” Stephanie said, her voice turning menacingly low for the last statement. She turned to leave the ward not waiting for a response from me I didn't know what to say to refute her, she's partly right. Darian will never believe that the child belongs to him and also because he always believes whatever she says to be true. _______ Time passed by quickly and it was dark outside. Darian didn't bother to come and visit me, but I was certain he came to the hospital to visit Stephanie. I couldn't help, but feel heartbroken. The doctor informed me that I'll be discharged in two days. I couldn't wait to leave this hospital to finally find out what exactly prompted the theft accusations to fall on me. As I slept peacefully, the door of the ward suddenly creaked open. I am a light sleeper so I opened my eyes immediately to see who entered. A tall figure walked in like he owned the room, I recognized who it was. The light switch flipped and everywhere became bright. I looked at Darian, he stared at me, face devoid of any emotions. I couldn't tell what he was thinking, he looked neither happy nor angry. “Selena,” His voice sent ripples to my heart. My name sounded so majestic on his lips. I closed my eyes to savour the moment. His next words brought me out of my fantasy. “Since when have you turned evil? Pushing Stephanie down the stairs? And to think she pleaded for me to spare you,” I couldn't muster up the courage to defend myself. His accusations didn't hurt me. What hurts the most is how he always believes what Stephanie tells him without a doubt. “Darian, you've known me for a long time, ever since I came into your family at sixteen, you of all people should know my character by now,” I said looking down. “You're not the same girl that came into the Johnson's family, you changed ever since Stephanie came back to the country. Why do you have so much hate against her?” His words made tears fill my eyes. “I don't hate Stephanie, if anything she's the one that hates me, she pulled my hair when I was climbing the stairs which caused us to fall. Besides she didn't hurt her ankle in the garden, if she did then she shouldn't have been able to climb the stairs,” I said to Darian, my voice choking up, and when I realized that he didn’t still believe me, I sighed. “Also why not give me the benefit of doubt, there's a surveillance camera in the villa, check it, you'll see I'm not lying,” A frown etched Darian's face at my words. His expression tells me he's considering what I said. Without another word he turned and left me alone in the ward. I knew he went to verify my claim, I just hope that after seeing the truth he won't blindly trust Stephanie anymore but that's just wishful thinking. It will take more than one surveillance footage to change his affection towards her. Feeling wide awake after Darian's visit, I decided to take a small walk in the hospital’s garden. The night was calm, the sounds of crickets everywhere. There were a few people around. I left there and walked towards an isolated place, I was the only one standing there. My frame looked peaceful but my entire world was in turmoil. Suddenly I heard the sound of a twig cracking. I turned but saw no one. Deciding to leave since where I was is quite eerie, I walked a few steps before someone jumped in front of me. “Ahhhhhh,” I screamed out in fear at the person. In front of me is a very huge masked man. His entire vibe gives me a sense of danger. I immediately made a move to run away from him, scared for my life but he quickly caught up with me. He hit me with his body, the inertia made me fall. A sharp pain passed through my abdomen. Just as I was about to scream, the man used his hands to cover my mouth, cutting my voice off. I struggled on the ground frantically, trying to wiggle myself from his grip. “Nighty night,” the man said. I felt a sharp pai n at the back of my head and suddenly everything went black.
