Kara’s POV:
The moment we drove away from the supermarket and Ethan’s toxic presence, I finally let myself relax. At least for the next few minutes, I could afford to just relax and take deep breaths.
I had secured the forty million dollars, but now that I was thinking about it, with Harris as my partner, did I really need it?
I knew he had far more than enough money for what we needed to do. But I wasn’t going to ask, not unless I actually needed it, and besides, I didn’t think there was anything I needed right now that forty million US dollars would not be able to cover.
A smile spread across my face as I realized that things were finally heading in the right direction for once.
“So,” Harris turned to face me, and his deep, baritone voice snapped me out of my thoughts, “What’s next for us, boss?” he asked,
“I still need to finish the deal with the supermarket,” I said, pushing back a smile as I glanced down at my phone. “The manager is expecting me.”
Harris nodded, “But do you want to do that now?” he asked,
“Yes.” I nodded, “I h-”
He didn’t let me finish. His eyes narrowed, and his tone dropped a lot more,
“Or…” he paused seductively, wait, seductively? Was he trying to seduce me?
For a very short moment, my mind short-circuited, and I had to force myself to breathe. It took a whole second, but I finally faced him,
“... Do you want to see the island first?”
This time, the pause lasted longer. Of course, I was planning on seeing the island. It was my future home after all. The one place I knew would give me a very large advantage during the early stages of the apocalypse.
It took almost a minute, but I eventually made my decision: “Actually, yes. Let’s do that now. I can handle the deal with the manager later.”
Harris smiled. “Good.”
Then, he began to direct me towards a drop point. A few minutes later, I drove right into a private hanger, and parked about a hundred meters close to a small private jet that had Harris logo plastered on the side.
I blinked, shocked as I stared at the jet for a second before turning my gaze towards Harris, “What is that?”
“My jet,” Harris shrugged as he opened the door, “I hardly use it, but it’s the only jet I have that would be able to touch down on the island and fly again.”
I blinked. I had no idea why, but the thought had not once crossed my mind that he would have a jet. And I blurted it out,
“You have a private jet?”
Harris gave me a look that could only be described as amused. “Of course, Kara,” he said, chuckling, “Which billionaire doesn’t have private jets?”
He enunciated the plural on the jets, and my brows shot up.
Sometimes I forgot just how rich this man actually was. I shook my head, got out of the car, and followed him up the steps towards the cabin.
I didn't bother asking questions, mainly because Harris was the one who needed some more questions. Throughout the flight, he kept on asking me about what I believe would happen in the future.
Eventually, our conversation even shifted towards whether he was going to get a superpower, and my answer was a noncommittal shrug. I honestly had zero idea if he would.
The flight wasn't long. It took about thirty minutes before I could finally see the island out the window.
It was a very beautiful sight to behold. The property was larger than a ranch, and was completely surrounded by the river. The main house itself was a mansion, but it wasn’t as huge as I thought it would be, so there was lots of open, arable land around it.
From the air, I began to count the buildings I could recognize. The island had a farmhouse, some large fields filled with green houses, a large storage building, and a couple of smaller structures that I could not recognize.
My mind immediately began working on how I would change the island over the next couple of days. The very first thing I would do was to create farmland.
At least 30% of the arable land on the entire island is going to be converted to farming. We would have to add more storage buildings, because Harris had mentioned earlier that he was going to stock up on his own, and add more non-perishables.
But the biggest thing we needed to do in the next seven days was to create a large fence around the entire island. This was going to be a massive undertaking, but it needed to be done.
Both Harris and I had agreed that it was the best thing to do.
We would leave a gate, of course, but a large, thick, five-meter fence would do more to help than a rotation of guards could do.
The main mansion was going to be reinforced, and we were going to add at least three different sources of free electricity. The water filtration centers were going to be built right behind the mansion.
When the jet landed, Harris helped me off of the jet, and began to lead me around the property.
“This entire section can be used for agriculture,” he said, pointing toward the fields.
I nodded. “Of course, we would need greenhouses for climate-controlled plants.”
Harris nodded, “I have already thought about that. Later today, once we are done here, I am going to start ordering all of them.”
We continued walking, and we spent the next few minutes to an hour just talking. E
Eventually, our chat shifted from the island itself to our personal lives.
“So, did he really cheat on you?” Harris asked, “And with whom?”
“My ex-best friend,” I answered through gritted teeth.
My tone must have been far too cold because Harris nodded and quickly changed the topic.
I let out a sigh of relief that he was not asking more questions. My lips parted, just as I was about to ask him about his own love life, I heard a small chip, and my entire body froze.
My muscles grew tense, and my body instinctively crouched.
Harris frowned, “What’s happening, Kara?” he asked, “Is-”
My eyes widened. “Get Down!” I shouted, and shoved Harris with everything I had.
The moment he dropped to the ground, something blurred right past us.
It was a creature almost as large as a leopard, but with brown fur instead and a rabbit’s face.
At least, it looked like one. Its body was much larger than a normal rabbit, and its eyes were completely red.
But its teeth were the most menacing part of their image. The teeth were far too long, deadly and sharp.
Harris' eyes widened as he stared blankly at the creature, “What the hell is that?”
I swallowed, my mind racing as I got up on my feet.
“A Ratjaw.” I whispered under my breath, “And this should not be possible,” I stared at the monster rabbit for one more second before I started to reach for my telekinesis powers, “Shit.”
