I let out a long, irritated groan. Out of all the people I had expected to run into today, Sarah wasn’t one of them. After today, I will have six days left to secure my base and to prepare for my new life.
Even though I hated her with all my heart, I did not have any time for Sarah and whatever antics she had planned. Unfortunately for me, Sarah wasn’t smart enough to notice that I didn’t want to see or even speak to her.
I didn’t want to hate a child for something that wasn’t his fault. So, I flashed little Cory a smile, and when I looked up to face his mother, I was frowning.
“Where have you been?” Sarah demanded. Her eyes had lit up the moment she spotted me, and when Cory had pointed me out, she had immediately dropped what she was buying and began to walk towards me. “I got a panicked call from Ethan earlier. He told me you asked for a divorce. What the f**k, Kara?” she hissed, “Why the hell would you do that? Do you know just how much he loves you?”
Her tone and voice was so loud that everyone in the supermarket heard her. It didn’t take long before we were both the center of attention for the entire lane around us.
Suddenly, shoppers were spending way more time idling around the lane I was in.
I blinked as I stared into the eyes of the woman who I had once considered to be my closest friend.
She looked exactly the same as the last time I had seen her. She still had that same concerned expression on her face, and her lips were curved downwards in what I now knew was fake worry.
This was the same woman who had pretended – and was still pretending – to be my best friend for years, while simultaneously f*****g my husband.
When I kept silent, Sarah took another step forward and continued her tirade.
“Also, why didn’t you pick my call and answer any of my messages?” she hissed, demanding a reply as though I was supposed to be at her beck and call. “I am sure you know I’ve been trying to reach you all morning,” she continued. “We're best friends, Kara. You should be able to tell me what you're feeling.”
I blinked. And for the next few seconds, I mused over her last words. And then, I laughed.
I had not meant to, but what she had said was so absurd that I could not stop a short chuckle from escaping my lips.
“What’s funny?” she asked, confused as she watched,
I shook my head. “You are.” I answered, “Excuse me, Ms. I have to leave. I am in too much of a hurry to talk to a traitor and a b***h. “
Sarah's face went blank. For a long moment, she looked confused, as though she could not understand the change in my reactions. Then, her mind settled on the last word that had left my lips.
“What the hell did you just call me?” she hissed, her face filled with rage.
I shrugged, “You heard me well,”
Her eyes widened. “Kara!” she yelled, this time, her tone was loud enough that even the cashiers who had been trying their best not to look over, all immediately turned their attention towards us.
Sarah didn't lower her voice. “I am worried about you. I am trying to help you out of the goodness of my heart, and this is how do you repay my kindness? By calling me names.”
Color me surprised, because she actually managed to sound hurt.
I rolled my eyes. Once again, Sarah was acting all innocent. She was never the aggressor. No, Sarah was too soft for that. She was always playing the victim.
Instead of replying her, I kept silent, nodded at the cashier and prepared to walk through another lane.
When she saw that I was ignoring her, Sarah lost it. Her eyes shot up, and she began to yell at me again.
“You act like you're almighty now,” she shouted. “Do you think you're better than everyone? You're nothing, Kara! Nothing!”
I stared at her for a few seconds. I had no idea what answer she expected out of me, and I didn’t have it. So, instead of stressing myself on someone who I had decided no longer concerned me, I just shrugged and kept on walking.
That was clearly not what Sarah had expected, because the moment I started walking towards the exit, she began to call out my name.
“Kara!” she yelled, “Don’t you turn your back on me. I am your best friend for God’s sake.”
I ignored her. She didn’t like that. Even though my back was to her, I could hear her stomping over.
“Kara, I'm talking to you!” she screamed again.
I picked up some groceries in a shopping cart and began to roll them towards the last cashier.
But just as I was about to get in line to check out my goods, Sarah rushed over and stood directly in front of me.
When I stopped, a smile spread across her face and she placed her hands on her hips.
“You're not walking away from me,” she hissed, “Not until you talk to me.”
“You're blocking my way,” I said, keeping my tone as calm as possible.
Sarah shook her head, “And I will keep on doing it till I get a reasonable explanation for your behavior.”
“I will decide when you get one,” I answered, “You are no longer my best friend. I don’t think you ever well. Now, please get out of my lane.”
Sarah's jaw tightened. “I don’t know why you are acting this way, but whatever reason you have, I want you to know that it is silly and completely ridiculous.”
“And you're wasting my time.” I hissed. This time, I was getting irritated. Why wouldn’t she just leave me the f**k alone?
Sarah clearly wasn’t listening to me, because she took a threatening step forward. Her lips parted, and I had no doubt she was about to yell at me again.
This time, I had enough. My eyes narrowed, and I reached for that new power within me that I had just discovered. I smiled as I felt my power stir within me, then, without moving my hands or making any obvious movements, I simply reached for the nearest and most discreet object with my mind.
A packet close to her feet twitched, and silently, I dragged it across the floor, right in front of Sarah’s foot.
Sarah was far too pissed off to even notice. Her face had long since twisted in anger, and as her foot landed on the packet, they shot forward, her arms flew into the air, and she landed hard on the ground.
Right on her face. Sarah screamed, and her hands flew to her mouth.
I looked down and smiled as I watched blood begin to trickle down her fingers. She had clearly broken several teeth. A few shoppers gasped, and they rushed forward to help her.
But I didn’t care, instead, I was filled with joy and a little bit of pride.
For the first time in either of my lives, I had finally stopped letting Sarah control the situation. I had simply used the power that fate had given me, and it felt good.
Sarah looked up at me through tear-filled eyes. Her lips parted, but the pain was far too much for her.
I didn't even wait for her to speak. Instead, I turned around and walked right out of the exit.
Before getting inside my car, I glanced back at the supermarket, and smiled as I kept on hearing Sarah’s screams.
Then I got into my car, started the engine and drove off.
I had gotten the lottery. Now, I just needed to get the money, then, I would be ready.
