Chapter Sixteen“Again there's Eden and I'm Eve, alone on the earth.” A chocolate bird perched in the green gold lace of a weeping birch. Mountain ash berries dropped orange and thick onto the tarmac beneath. A volcano erupted four hundred miles from the city in which Sweet Foot lived like a ghost. An old De Soto car rusted beneath a layer of bird droppings and ash. A new mountain erupted from the Rocky Mountains, smoking; great boulders poured from its bowels.
