## Chapter 14: Danger! Bitten by a Snake

1390 Words
Sun Datou was extremely satisfied with both the food and the live stream results. Jiang Tingyun watched the streamer eat happily and felt a sense of relief. *Looks like the bitter melon feast wasn’t a failure. He probably won’t say anything bad about my restaurant. Maybe he’ll even give it some good publicity,* she thought cheerfully. As it turned out, Sun Datou was somewhat well-known locally. Over the next two days, fans kept showing up, specifically asking for bitter melon dishes. Jiang Tingyun had carefully planned a different menu, but customers kept coming and demanding the bitter melon feast. She wanted to stand her ground—*I should stay true to my principles. The menu must change*—but they kept offering too much money. For the sake of the cash, she ended up cooking bitter melon for three days straight, her hands reeking of the stuff. She really couldn’t cook bitter melon anymore. To the newcomers, it was a novelty, but her regulars were starting to flee. No matter how good a dish was, you couldn’t serve bitter melon three days in a row. Just in time for the Dragon Boat Festival, Jiang Tingyun decided to go into the back mountain to pick some reed leaves to make zongzi. She absolutely needed to switch up the menu. By now, she was completely comfortable going up the mountain. So when she felt something soft underfoot, she didn’t realize anything was wrong. Then her ankle stung. Jiang Tingyun looked down. Right by her foot was a slender little snake—triangular head covered in fine scales, overall grayish-brown, and it didn’t look friendly at all. Her hair stood on end, and she nearly jumped out of her skin. Fortunately, her hand reacted faster than her brain. She swung her sickle and chopped the snake in half. Even though it looked dead, she didn’t dare get close. She quickly pulled out her phone and took a photo of the snake. This wasn’t for social media. As a former ER doctor, she knew that documenting the snake’s appearance would help doctors identify the species and find the right antivenom. Jiang Tingyun tried to make her way down the mountain, but her ankle hurt more and more. She felt completely overwhelmed. This was the middle of nowhere—everyone else was down the mountain. Calling 120 was unrealistic; they’d never find her. She was about to be stuck up here. “Wait! Pei Jingmo is on the mountain.” Jiang Tingyun smacked her forehead in excitement. She remembered that her senior disciple spent every day in the back mountain doing who knows what. The first time she went up, Uncle Liu had said that if anything happened, she should just yell his name. She forced herself to stand up, looked around, and shouted into the forest: “PEI JINGMO!!! Are you there??? Your Sect Master needs your help—it’s an emergency!!!” Her shout echoed through the woods, shaking the treetops. For a moment, the whole mountain went dead silent. Jiang Tingyun felt a twinge of disappointment. *What if he’s not here? Sure, Uncle Liu said this disciple has amazing hearing, but can he really hear a shout from anywhere in such a big forest?* *The only one who could come when called like that would be Superman.* Suddenly, she heard the sound of air parting through the trees. Then a figure came flying toward her in rapid bounds, moving so fast it kicked up gusts of wind. In an instant, he was right in front of her. “So this is qinggong—lightness skill?” Her jaw dropped in shock—wide enough to catch flies. No, that wasn’t the point. The point was that he actually came when she called. That was incredible! Pei Jingmo didn’t say a word. He looked her over, then immediately noticed the snake beside her. “This snake is venomous,” he said, frowning deeply. He quickly crouched down to examine Jiang Tingyun’s ankle. Two deep fang marks were faintly oozing blood, and the ankle had already swollen. He promptly pulled the laces out of his sneakers and tied them tightly below her knee. Then he turned his back and bent down. “Get on. We’re going down right now, to the hospital.” He was about the same age as her, but he still looked like a teenager. Jiang Tingyun felt a little guilty about climbing onto his back—she was a full-grown adult, after all. But she knew this wasn’t the time to be precious. Even though her constitution had improved after awakening her cultivation, if the snake was highly venomous, her life could be in danger. Without another word, she quickly scrambled onto his back. The trees whizzed past at breakneck speed. Jiang Tingyun couldn’t even see the path ahead. A few times she felt like she was flying, and she wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. Her senior disciple looked slim, but when he ran at full speed, she could feel the strength and power in his back as he ran. The descent that usually took over an hour felt like less than ten minutes this time. Even at that speed, Pei Jingmo’s breathing had only grown slightly heavier. When they reached the foot of the mountain, he was about to carry her all the way to the town hospital. She quickly stopped him. There were security cameras everywhere these days. If he ran that fast, they’d end up on the news. “Take Jin Feifan’s electric tricycle!” she said. In that moment, she was silently grateful for Jin Feifan’s tricycle. As jury-rigged as his contraptions were, they had saved her on multiple occasions. But once she made some decent money, she was definitely getting a better vehicle—at least a decent minivan. Pei Jingmo looked at the beat-up tricycle and his face stiffened. But he gritted his teeth and got into the driver’s seat. Thankfully, the roads were wide and open, and the town hospital wasn’t far. Jiang Tingyun lay in the cargo bed of the tricycle and let out a long breath. *Looks like I’ll be saved soon.* Now that she’d relaxed, she noticed that Pei Jingmo’s temples were damp with sweat. He looked incredibly tense, his hands gripping the handlebars rigidly. “……You don’t know how to drive a tricycle, do you?” Even though she was riding in a vehicle driven by someone who didn’t know how to drive it—putting her at constant risk of a fatal crash—Jiang Tingyun still found it hilarious. She couldn’t help laughing. This guy was her lifesaver, and laughing was really rude. But he was usually so aloof, carrying his sword like some invincible martial arts master. Seeing him now, nervously creeping along on a beat-up tricycle… Jiang Tingyun couldn’t resist. She pulled out her phone and started filming him secretly. Pei Jingmo was almost speechless. “Jiang Tingyun, that snake clearly didn’t bite you hard enough.” “Sorry, sorry, my savior. Just a little more recording. Just a tiny bit.” --- Soon they reached the hospital. Pei Jingmo scooped Jiang Tingyun up, shifted his grip, slung her over his shoulder like a sack of rice, and walked briskly into the emergency room. “Ugh… take it easy.” Jiang Tingyun’s stomach was pressed against his shoulder, and she had to fight the urge to throw up. Fortunately, the ER wasn’t busy, and the doctor was professional. As soon as he saw the photo, he identified it as the local pit viper. Luck was on her side. As the weather had gotten hotter, quite a few people had been bitten, so the town hospital happened to have antivenom in stock. Still, because it was a snakebite, she needed to stay for observation. Staying in the hospital cost money, but that was minor. At least her life was safe. She felt a chill thinking about it—if it hadn’t been for her senior disciple today, she would have been in real danger. But now, just as the restaurant’s business was picking up, she had to close for a while. And there was the yard—the vegetables had just started bearing fruit. She’d have to ask Uncle Liu to look after them.
