The Impromptu

As time slowly trekked by, Alexa couldn't help being anxious while she remained at home waiting endlessly for her results. Though she had been helping her mother with her shop and household chores lately– she just couldn't put her mind at rest. After a busy morning assisting her mother with customers at the flower shop– Alexa finally got to rest. Slamming herself into the chair behind her desk situated somewhere in the corner of the shop, her eyes fell on the mini clock seated beside her laptop– noon, it read. “Aren’t you going out for lunch?” her mother's voice invaded from the counter where she stood– going through the record book. “No mum,” Alexa said as she deftly turned her gaze to the direction of the call then back to her desk. “I don't feel like going out. I’ll just order something.” She added, turning on her laptop. Just then, Samantha’s call came in. A smile instinctively swept the latter’s face on seeing who the caller was. “You should check your screen,” the former’s voice rapted Alexa’s ear the moment she answered. Intuitively, the latter tittered. “What’s this about?” she asked, sensing the ecstasy in her friend’s voice. Though the two had been in contact after their graduation– never had Samantha sounded this excited over the phone and Alexa couldn't just wrap her mind over the reason. “Just check it,” Samantha hastily muttered~ not giving out any clues. Without another word, Alexa sent her attention to the PC which had just finished launching its icons. At that moment, an email notification got her attention. Samantha on the other hand, waited patiently while she remained held up behind the phone– careful not to sell any clues too soon though she was shocked to know Alexa had suddenly forgotten the day she had been waiting for so long. She was still with her thoughts when Alexa’s voice hit her. “Wait, let me check this.” she heard her say. Though the former didn't say what it was; Samantha knew too well and just waiting for her reaction which she knew will follow in about the next minute or two. ****** Back at the shop, Alexa clicked on the mail notification while still on the phone with Samantha. LIBERTY COLLEGE, the title of the letter read. The former’s heart instantly skipped a bit on realizing what this was all about. With bated breath, she clicked on the letter. Within the next second, its content was displayed on the screen. With knitted brows, she scanned through the letter as slowly as possible with rapt concentration. A shout instantly escaped her lips on getting to the most important part. “I passed,” she exclaimed, covering her mouth with her hand. Samantha on the other hand– smiled to herself. Just the reaction she had been waiting for. Alexa without being told could see her smiling from ear to ear on the other side of the phone. “I know right?” Samantha muttered, giggling. “Hey, are you okay?” a familiar voice rated Alexa’s ears from behind. She deftly turned– knowing whom it was. Samantha on the other hand heard the voice which she knew was Alexa’s mum. “Let me call you back.” The former said– her excitement evident in her voice. “Sure, why not?” Samantha answered and without hesitation, placed down the call. As if on an impulse, Alexa jolted to her feet– swimming into her mother’s arms without warning. “I got picked mum~,” she said, wrapping Iris’ neck in the process. “You did?” Iris grumbled, her face brightening up with the biggest smile ever while she drew her daughter back from the hug. “I’m so proud of you dear,” she added, curbing Alexa’s face. “By the way, when are you reporting?” The words quickly strike– irking her into realization. “Oh yeah, didn't even take notice of that,” her lips curved into a sheepish grin and on an impulse, rushed back to her desk. Leaning over her chair, she scanned through the letter on the screen once again. “Wait, what?” Alexa exuded as her gaze remained on the screen. “Why? what happened? ” Iris inquired, rushing to her daughter's end. Intuitively, she hunched beside Alexa– staring at the screen as well. “You only have this afternoon to prepare?” she cast the latter a glance and she nodded. “Did Samantha say anything about hers?” “I don't think she even knows." Alexa chipped in, a bit nettled by the whole situation. She had been waiting for like her whole life for this and now it came, she has less time to prepare. Iris glanced at her daughter who looked displeased by the turn of events and sighed. “Come on dear, we can work with the little time we have,” she said, kneading Alexa’s shoulder. “or are you saying you want to give up now?” Iris hastily added, knowing Alexa wasn't someone who gives up easily. Especially with something she is so keen on doing. “No mum~” the latter snapped in– just the reaction her mother was looking forward to. Iris knew how much her daughter loves dancing and would go every length to put smiles on her face even if it meant giving out the last piece of her. “I’ll give Samantha a call then,” she added. “Sure, you should get packing. I’ll just lock up so we go.” Iris said, brushing her hand through her daughter’s hair as she landed a kiss on her head. With the words sinking into Alexa’s ears, Iris hurried back to the counter while she dialed her husband’s line to give him an update. Not long had she left that she heard her daughter's voice over the phone– talking with her friend as she briskly moved her things. In about 20mins, they both sauntered out of the shop~ instantly hit by the hot rays. With quick steps, they glided into the car and Iris pulled into motion– navigating her way into the drive way
