A loud bang on the door of her room made Sylvia rush over to the partition with which she was served. A day had gone by and she hadn't been given the luxury of being fed.
She was brought food and water twice a day, but otherwise, she was either left alone or made to work. This was one of those times.
Air and her nails had been her new desert. And don't forget the laments, the tears. She was done with this life, the life of suffering.
Nothing surrounded Sylvia's mind more than escape. Fleeing from the hands of these vicious werewolves and finding comfort once more in the company of her vampire clan waiting for her somewhere.
To her misfortune, that didn't look like it was going to happen anytime soon. Hours turned into days, and days turned into weeks, and Sylvia grew more and more desperate.
Each day brought with it rations of forced labor for hours, cleaning and cooking for the werewolves, and enduring the usual harsh punishment of the Alpha whenever she made a mistake.
Just as she was fed, she was led out to do her chores once more. She was cleaning Alpha's house this time.
“Did you hear that?” One of the maids whispered to her partner. Sylvia, who stood close, picked up on their gossip.
She had heard something. It was noise, an ululation. It came from a crowd, and they were hailing someone or something, whatever the case was. People were rushing outside to see what was bringing about this commotion.
“Yeah. It must be the Prince coming back home.”
Just the mention of Prince had the other girl swooned. “Oh, my god. I can't wait to see what he has brought back with him this time.”
Sylvia was confused. “Prince?”
“It is none of your concern, miscreant. Go back to your sweeping.” She turned to her friend who was giggling. “Come on let's go welcome him back home.”
Sylvia waited until the maids had left. She crept towards the window.
There stood the Prince in his splendor. Battle apparel and all looking splendid. His troops were trailing behind him while he rode on his horse. Crowds railed on both sides of him.
Sylvia's eyes roamed the crowd until it fell on the only friend she had made since she first arrived in the pack, Aspen.
She was an omega, one of the lowly members of the pack curved to work in the pack as well.
“Hey, have you finally had something to eat?” Aspen asked as she walked over.
“Yeah.” I nodded in the Prince's direction. “I can't thank you enough. You're the only one who has given me care and taken interest in my rights since I found myself here.”
Aspen sighed. “It's okay. I know how you feel. I mean, you're no different from me. If we both suffer from the injustice if the Alpha, then we should both stick together, don't we?”
“Yeah.” I nodded in the direction of the Prince. “Who the hell has everybody in a twist like this?”
“Didn't you hear the proclamation earlier? It is the Prince, he is just back from his latest quest. Everyone is so excited to welcome him back.”
Sylvia sighed. The son of a dictator. Surely the Apple was not going to fall so far from the tree.
“I think he's familiar. I could have sworn I had met him before. Perhaps if I talk to him, more of my memories will come back.”
Sylvia had barely made a step when Aspen held her back.
“Are you crazy? One wrong move and guards will probably be taking you out. If there's one person they don't want around him, it's a low life like us.”
Sylvia sighed. “I thought as much. He is probably as arrogant and heartless as his father.”
Sylvia had been right about him. She would take Aspen's advice and stay as far away as she could from the man. He could only bring her bad timing.
“Hey, you two!” A guard yelled, rushing towards them. “Get back to work before I whip you.”
They were two things Sylvia was very mindful of. Behavior that would inhibit her getting her usual ration of food and upset the alpha. Add getting close to the Prince to that list.
The incident swept past Sylvia as fast as it had played out. She had kept a low nose since she arrived. She had tried her best to stay out of trouble, yet it never seemed far-fetched.
It was last in her sleep, waking up the next morning to go to her usual duties.
Despite her mopping their floor, there were a dozen other chores lined up for her. She needed to get this over with as soon as possible so that she could still have time for herself.
Her head had been buried in her business but by the time it had flown up, it met a new pair of eyes. One which she had been told to back the hell away from, or she would have herself to be sorry for messing with.
“He is so cute, isn't he?” Aspen cooed beside her. “If I had my way I would make him mine.”
“That is the least of my worries, Aspen. The man is staring at me.”
Aspen yanked my elbow. “If you want to stay alive to the end of the day you had better keep your head down.”
“I can't. I'm sure me and that man have met somewhere…”
“Yeah, you were probably taken captive by his battalion.”
Sylvia's eyes shone. “If that is the case, then I need to speak with him immediately.”
“Don't go.”
Hardly had the words left Aspen's mouth had her friends already been halfway striving towards the alpha's den.’
Her heart drummed in terror, her legs barely mustering enough courage to carry her through. But that didn't mean she wasn't going to try. If he had any information about her origin, then she would scrape it out of him.
As soon as the guards he was talking to had dispersed, Sylvia made her way over to him.
"Excuse me," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Excuse me,” this time her voice was louder. “Have we met before?”
He turned to her.
Oh no, that was it. She expected a hand to fly across her face in a slap. No royal would ever want to be seen sitting this close to a worthless slave, talk more of talking with them.
She dragged a breath and was ready. If he was going to rain fire on her, he could bring it in. As long as he told her what she needed to know.
“I don't believe we have. I'm sure I would recall. You must be new here.”
“Yes, your majesty.”
How the hell was he so polite and soft? Weren't all royals supposedly born with an iron fist? Sylvia had anticipated how this encounter would go a couple of ways, but not like this. This was far from her expectations.
“Your majesty?” He paused to scoff. “The name is Kelvin. Prince Kelvin.”
To say Sylvia was flabbergasted would be to belittle. Never would she expect such treatment from a man of that class.
This was the most valid lead she had in all her time here. She had a lot of questions and this new acquaintance of hers looked like he would have a lot of answers.
“Well, I have to run along for some duties. See you around.”
“Sylvia,” she completed, struggling to hide her blush.
So hot and he was charming as well!
Sylvia wasn't the only one starstruck. So was Aspen.
“Wow, you spoke with the Prince!” she cooed. “So what now?”
Sylvia was excited about her. Now that she had found someone who could help her, she was prepared to dive into her plan as soon as possible.
“i am going to ask him to help us escape.”
“What? Are you crazy?! Not only is he going to be angry with you for trying to escape, but he's going to report to his father!”
Sylvia turned to her, pulling Aspen into a corner where no one would see or hear them.
“You think I don't know?”
“I don't. You must not remember that the last time an omega tried to flee from his service in the palace, Alpha held the sword with which they beheaded the poor man.” She was trembling.
“Aspen, we have no choice. If we don't get help, we'll be stuck here for the rest of our lives.”
“Yours taking a risk, Sylvia. I have thought about this in all the possible ways and I don't see it working out. What if he reports us? What if he doesn't turn out to be the trustworthy man you have him out to be.”
“It's our last hope. Something tells me he is different from the others and will be ready to help. Besides, what have we got to lose? We stay here and die of despair. We try to escape and be rest assured of our freedom.”
“Do you think he is going to listen?” Aspen asked.
Her entire time here had been one of turmoil and suffering. She knew no other life than this. Imagine being signed up to work for the Alpha as soon as you're old enough to take orders.
Escape plans? This wasn't her first time being around someone with them. Probably the third. But when the first and second had gone to dust, including the second resulting in a death, she had been thrown into despair and welcomed her fate.
“I don't know. But you can rest assured, I'll try to talk him into accepting to help us.”
THE NEXT DAY
“I'm going now, wish me luck.”
Those were Aspen's last words as she stepped out of the kitchen, adjusting her dress. She had just warned Aspen to keep their plans quiet.
If there was one thing about Aspen, she hangs around gossipers a lot. Hence, how she was able to get accurate details about happenings in the palace and why, more than often, she would get into trouble or two.
“My mouth has been zipped short. Not a word to anyone.”
Sylvia hoped so.
If everything was in place, they wouldn't be doing anyone's laundry anymore in the next two weeks. She took a deep breath before marching towards where Prince Kelvin sat in the courtyard. She chose a time when he was alone and the courtyard was empty.
Kelvin turned to see her. “Hey, Sylvia.”
Sylvia beamed. He remembered her name! Her head was bowed as she spoke. Just because he was being nice didn't mean she hadn't regarded his authority.
He was stinking gorgeous. Now she could see why every maiden in the pack was looking forward to being his. Someone with so much affluence and influence made her swept right off her feet.
“Good morning, your majesty. Please, I want to talk to you about something!” She said, her gaze not leaning on the floor.
This was beginning to seem like a bad idea. The what ifs were beginning to get loud in her head. What if he got angry? Wouldn't it be considered as treason to help a slave to escape? Why should he be ready to risk laying down his honor for her?
“Yeah, I'm all ears.”
Now I had the opportunity to speak, she froze. She was too stuck on wondering about how things would go wrong rather than putting words together to sell my case.
“You have to help me, please. A few months ago, I was taken from my clan and brought down here as a slave. On the way here, I list my memories and have no idea how I ended up here or where I am from. I wonder how much my family are worried about me.”
She looked up to see his eyes ridden with concern. “I'm so sorry about that. I never knew my father had you going through all that stress.” he gave her a nod to carry on. “How can I help you?”
“I need to escape, and need your help.”
