(Ryan's POV)
I looked at Emma, my heart racing with determination. We had to protect her and Mia from my family's threats. I couldn't let them hurt the people I loved.
"Let's go to the police," I said, my voice firm. "We'll tell them everything and get protection for Mia."
Emma nodded, her eyes wide with fear. I knew she was scared, but I was determined to keep her safe.
As we stood up to leave, I heard a noise outside. Footsteps crunching through the gravel. My instincts kicked in and I pulled Emma close.
"Stay here," I whispered. "I'll go check it out."
I crept towards the door, my eyes scanning the surroundings. That's when I saw him. Alex, my brother, standing outside the cottage with a menacing grin on his face.
"Ryan, you can't hide forever," he sneered.
My heart raced with anger. How did he find us? I knew I had to protect Emma and Mia.
"Leave now, Alex," I warned. "Or I'll call the police."
Alex laughed. "You think the police can protect you? We own this town, Ryan. And we'll do whatever it takes to keep our secrets safe."
I knew I had to act fast. I pulled out my phone and dialed the police, my eyes never leaving Alex's face.
As I waited for the police to arrive, Alex took a step closer to me. "You're making a big mistake, Ryan," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "You're going to regret crossing us."
I stood my ground, my heart racing with adrenaline. I knew I had to protect Emma and Mia.
Suddenly, Alex's eyes flickered to something behind me. I turned to see Emma standing in the doorway, her eyes wide with fear.
"Emma, go back inside," I said, trying to keep my voice calm.
But she didn't move. She just kept staring at Alex, her eyes filled with a mix of fear and defiance.
"Ah, Emma," Alex said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "How nice of you to join us."
I took a step forward, my fists clenched. "Leave her alone, Alex," I warned.
But before I could do anything else, the police arrived. Two officers stepped out of the car and approached us.
"What's going on here?" one of them asked, eyeing Alex warily.
I took a deep breath and explained the situation. The officers listened intently, their faces growing more and more serious.
When I finished, they turned to Alex. "I think it's time for you to leave," one of them said.
Alex sneered, but he knew he was outnumbered. He turned and walked away, disappearing into the darkness.
The officers turned to us. "We'll need to take a statement from you both," one of them said. "And we'll increase patrols around the area."
I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. Maybe, just maybe, we were finally safe.
But as I looked at Emma, I saw the fear still lurking in her eyes. And I knew we weren't out of the woods yet.
As we gave our statements to the police, I couldn't help but notice the fear still lingering in Emma's eyes. I knew we weren't out of the woods yet. My family's reach was far and wide, and I knew they wouldn't give up easily.
After the police left, I turned to Emma and pulled her close. "We'll get through this," I whispered. "I promise."
She nodded, her eyes welling up with tears. "I'm just so scared, Ryan," she said. "I don't want anything to happen to Mia."
I held her tight, feeling a surge of determination. I would do whatever it took to keep them safe.
Just then, my phone buzzed. It was a text from Sarah, Emma's friend. "Hey, I've been trying to reach you guys. I got worried when I saw the police cars outside your place. Is everything okay?"
I showed the text to Emma, and she nodded. "She knows where we are," she said. "I told her to come here if she needed to reach us."
I nodded, and texted Sarah back. "We're fine. Just a little scare. Come on over."
A few minutes later, Sarah arrived at the cottage, her car pulling up outside. She got out, looking around cautiously, and then came inside.
"Hey," she said, her voice soft. "I saw the police cars and I got worried. Is everything okay?"
Emma nodded, still sniffling. "Yeah, we're fine," she said. "Just a little scare."
Sarah nodded, her eyes understanding. "I'm staying over tonight," she said. "We can keep each other company."
I nodded, grateful for her support. As we settled in for the night, I knew we still had a long road ahead of us. But with Emma and Mia by my side, and Sarah's support, I felt like I could face anything.
As we settled in for the night, I couldn't shake off the feeling that we were being watched. I kept looking over my shoulder, expecting to see Alex or one of my family's goons lurking in the shadows.
But there was no one there.
I tried to focus on the present moment, on the fact that Emma and Mia were safe, and that Sarah was there to support us.
As we talked and laughed, trying to distract ourselves from the danger that lurked outside, I realized that I had fallen deeply in love with Emma. She was strong and brave, and she had captured my heart in a way that I never thought possible.
As the night wore on, Emma yawned and stood up. "I'm going to bed," she said. "I'm exhausted."
I nodded, standing up to walk her to the bedroom. As we said our goodnights, I leaned in to kiss her.
But just as our lips touched, we heard a loud crash from outside.
My heart racing, I pulled away from Emma and ran to the window.
And that's when I saw it. A figure, lurking in the shadows.
