Chapter 7: Hiding In Plain Sight

953 Words
(Emma's POV) I couldn't believe what was happening. Ryan's family was actually threatening me, trying to tear us apart. I felt like I was living in a nightmare. As we walked away from the SUV, I couldn't help but wonder what we had gotten ourselves into. Ryan's family was powerful and ruthless, and I didn't know if we could escape their wrath. But Ryan was determined to keep me safe. He took me to a small cottage on the outskirts of town, surrounded by woods and a high fence. "This is where we'll stay for a while," he said, his eyes scanning the property. "We'll be safe here." I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. But as we settled into the cottage, I couldn't shake off the feeling that we were hiding in plain sight. Ryan's family could find us anywhere. As the days passed, we lived in a state of constant fear. We barely left the cottage, and when we did, it was always with caution. I felt like I was losing myself, like I was disappearing into this new reality. But Ryan was always there for me, holding my hand, telling me that everything would be okay. And I believed him, because I had to. One day, as we were walking through the woods, Ryan turned to me and said, "I have an idea. We can't hide forever. We need to fight back." I looked at him, my heart racing with excitement. "What did you have in mind?" I asked. Ryan smiled, his eyes gleaming with determination. "Let's just say, it's time we take matters into our own hands." And with that, our plan was set in motion. We would face Ryan's family head-on, and we would fight for our love. But as I sat on the couch in the small cottage, my mind racing with thoughts of my daughter, Mia. She was only 6 years old, and I had to make the difficult decision to keep her away from the danger that was Ryan's family. I had sent her to live with my trusted friend, Sarah, who had a big house on the other side of town. Sarah had a son of her own, and Mia loved playing with him. I knew she was in good hands. But it was hard to be away from her. I missed her bright smile, her curious nature, and her infectious laugh. I missed reading her bedtime stories, and tucking her in at night. Ryan came over and sat down beside me. "Hey, what's wrong?" he asked, noticing the look on my face. "I was just thinking about Mia," I said, feeling a lump form in my throat. "I miss her so much." Ryan put his arm around me and pulled me close. "I know, baby," he said. "But we have to keep her safe. We can't let my family find her." I nodded, knowing he was right. Ryan's family would stop at nothing to tear us apart, and I couldn't let them hurt my daughter. "Where is she?" Ryan asked, looking at me with concern. "She's with Sarah," I replied. "My friend from work. She has a big house, and Mia loves playing with her son." Ryan nodded, looking relieved. "Good," he said. "We can trust Sarah to keep her safe." I nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Sarah. She had always been there for me, and now she was helping me protect my daughter. As I sat there, thinking about Mia, I couldn't help but feel a sense of guilt. I had brought Ryan into our lives, and now Mia was in danger because of it. But Ryan saw the look on my face and took my hand. "This isn't your fault, Emma," he said. "My family is responsible for their own actions. We can't control them, but we can control how we react." I nodded, feeling a sense of determination. We would get through this, together. Just then, Ryan's phone rang. He hesitated for a moment before answering it. "Hello?" he said, his voice cautious. I watched as his face changed from calm to concerned. "What is it?" I asked, feeling a sense of dread. "It's my father," Ryan said, his voice low. "He's threatening to find Mia if we don't back off." My heart skipped a beat as I heard the words. We had to protect Mia at all costs. "What are we going to do?" I asked, feeling a sense of panic. Ryan's face hardened. "We're going to fight back," he said. "We're going to make sure my family can't hurt us or Mia." I nodded, feeling a sense of determination. We would do whatever it took to keep our little family safe. Ryan's eyes locked onto mine, and I could see the determination burning within them. "We'll go to the police," he said. "We'll tell them everything, and they'll protect us." I nodded, feeling a sense of hope. Maybe, just maybe, we could finally find a way to escape Ryan's family's grasp. But as we stood up to leave, I heard a noise outside. It sounded like footsteps, crunching through the gravel outside the cottage. Ryan's head snapped towards the sound, and he pulled me close. "Stay here," he whispered. "I'll go check it out." I nodded, my heart racing with fear. What if it was Ryan's family? What if they had found us? Ryan crept towards the door, his eyes scanning the surroundings. I waited anxiously, my ears straining to hear any sound. And then, I heard it. A voice, low and menacing. "Ryan, you can't hide forever." My heart skipped a beat as I recognized the voice. It was Ryan's brother, Alex.
