SEVEN:CRACKS IN THE ARMOR

771 Words
The next morning dawned bright, but Sapphira barely noticed the sunlight filtering through her bedroom curtains. Sleep had been elusive, her mind replaying every word, every glance from last night. She told herself it was just dinner—professional courtesy, a harmless conversation. Yet, the ghost of Jake’s touch still lingered, and that unsettled her more than she cared to admit. By the time she arrived at the courthouse, the familiar hum of activity offered a strange comfort. The scent of polished wood and paper, the echo of hurried footsteps—all of it grounded her in the reality she knew best: the fight for justice. Marie was waiting near the defense table, a stack of documents in her arms and a worried look on her face. “You’re cutting it close,” she whispered, glancing at the clock. “And we’ve got a problem.” Sapphira’s heartbeat quickened. “What kind of problem?” Marie handed her a file. “The prosecution filed a motion late last night. They want to introduce a new witness—one that wasn’t on their original list.” Sapphira flipped through the pages, her pulse pounding. The name jumped out at her like a strike of lightning. Lillian Brooks. Her jaw tightened. “She’s their surprise? That’s dirty play.” Marie lowered her voice. “Word is, she claims to have overheard your client admitting guilt.” Sapphira snapped the file shut, her spine straightening. “Convenient. Too convenient.” Her eyes flicked across the room—and landed on Jake. He was leaning casually against the prosecution table, sleeves rolled to his elbows, a picture of ease that only made her bristle more. When his gaze met hers, that familiar flicker of amusement returned, as if he knew exactly how much this move would rattle her. “Your Honor,” Jake’s voice rang out as the judge entered, smooth and confident. “The prosecution requests permission to call an additional witness—Miss Lillian Brooks.” A murmur rippled through the courtroom. Sapphira rose slowly, every inch the composed attorney, though inside her thoughts churned like a storm. “Objection, Your Honor,” she said firmly, her voice cutting through the buzz. “This is an ambush, plain and simple. The defense was given no prior notice of this witness, which is a violation of due process.” Jake turned to face her, lips curling in a faint smile that sent heat rushing to her cheeks—though whether from anger or something else, she couldn’t say. “With all due respect,” he countered, “the witness came forward only last night. Justice doesn’t wait for convenience, Ms. Wellington.” The judge held up a hand, silencing the tension sparking between them. “I’ll hear arguments in chambers after the morning recess. Until then, both counsels, prepare your statements.” As the gavel came down, Sapphira sank into her chair, her hands gripping the edge of the table. Jake had thrown the first real curveball, and she wasn’t about to let him win this round. Across the room, Jake gathered his papers with unhurried grace. Before leaving, he glanced her way—just for a second—but the look in his eyes said everything: Game on. Sapphira exhaled slowly, steel hardening in her spine. Whatever connection sparked between them last night, it ended the moment this motion hit the table. Or so she told herself. As the morning recess approached, Sapphira gathered her thoughts and prepared for the arguments in chambers. She knew she had to be sharp and persuasive to convince the judge to exclude Lillian Brooks' testimony. In chambers, Sapphira presented her case, emphasizing the lack of notice and the potential prejudice to the defense. Jake countered with his own arguments, highlighting the importance of the witness's testimony and the prosecution's duty to present all relevant evidence. The judge listened attentively, her expression thoughtful. After hearing both sides, she made her decision. "I will allow the witness to testify, but I will also grant the defense additional time to prepare and investigate Ms. Brooks' claims." Sapphira's face tightened slightly, but she nodded in acceptance. She knew she had to adapt and respond to this new development. As they left the chambers, Jake approached her. "Looks like the game is on, indeed," he said, his eyes sparkling with challenge. Sapphira smiled coolly. "Bring it on, Mr. Hayes." The trial would continue, and Sapphira was ready to fight. But she couldn't shake off the feeling that Jake's surprise witness was just the beginning of a more complex and intense battle ahead.
