Lorna pretended to consider. 'Could you tell me who brought them in? This respectable gentleman who brought them. Who was he?' 'Oh it was no man; it was a lovely respectable girl. Quite charming she was,' Miffy said. Margaret returned from her trip on the other side of the counter and nodded to Lorna, who took a step closer to the door. 'Five shillings the pair; how's that?' Miffy asked. 'Four shillings and that's my final offer.' 'Done,' Miffy spat on the palm of her hand and extended it. Lorna took it gingerly, parted with the money and guided Margaret out of the shop.
