The sun had vanished behind the Welsh hills, and the Malverns were in shadow. She could not see anybody. 'Miss!' Margaret shouted so suddenly that Lorna started. 'Look!' She jabbed downward with her forefinger. 'What's that?' Fully aware how far a human voice could carry in the stillness of the night, Lorna spoke loudly. 'What have you found?' Keeping her back to the hidden watcher, she crouched down with Margaret at her side. They looked at the hole in the dirt. 'Right Margaret,' Lorna said quietly. 'If somebody's watching us, he won't see much in this light. Pretend to lift something and put it in the bag. I'll carry the bag.' 'Yes Miss.' Improvising
