*THE SPOT - 9:00 AM*
Lila Thompson stirred her latte until the foam was gone.
"You’re doing that angry coffee thing again," Maya said, sliding into the booth across from her.
The Spot was theirs. A little corner café with chipped mugs and the best pastries in the city. They’d claimed the corner table since college. No one else sat here.
Lila pushed the gold envelope across the table. "Grandma Cross sent this."
Maya picked it up. "To Cross Tower? For a 'family meeting'?" She looked up. "As his fiancée?"
"The fake one," Lila said.
Maya reached over and squeezed her hand. "Lila. You don’t have to go."
"I do," Lila whispered. "For Leo. For his school. For..."
For the way Damian said "you’re staying" last week and meant it.
Maya sighed. "Then we do this my way. You walk in there like you own the building. Because you own yourself. Not him. Not her."
"Her?"
"Evelyn Hart." Maya’s voice went cold. "Please. Everyone knows she was in his office 5 years ago. She’s probably still warming his chair."
Lila’s stomach twisted.

*CROSS TOWER - 11:00 AM*
Forty floors of glass and power.
Lila wore navy. Simple. Professional. The only thing expensive on her was the ring on her finger. Fake diamond. Real weight.
Leo held her hand. "Mommy, it’s so tall."
"I know, baby."
The elevator doors opened.
And there she was.
Evelyn Hart.
Red dress. Red heels. Hand resting on Damian’s suit sleeve like it belonged there.
"Lila Thompson," Damian said. His voice was rough.
Evelyn turned slowly. Her smile didn’t reach her eyes. "Oh. You must be the fiancée."
She dragged the word out.
"This is my son, Leo," Lila said. Her voice didn’t shake. "And yes. I’m his fiancée."
Leo looked up. "Daddy?"
The entire floor went silent.
Damian’s jaw clenched. "Leo."
Evelyn laughed softly. "How sweet. I’m Evelyn. Head of PR. And Damian’s date for the charity gala tonight." She leaned into him. "We’ve known each other forever, haven’t we?"
`Forever.`
Something hot flared in Lila’s chest.
Not sadness.
Anger.
"That’s nice," Lila said, smiling. "Because I was told the fiancée handles the public events."
Evelyn’s smile twitched.
Damian stepped forward. "Evelyn. Enough."
"Is it enough?" Evelyn dropped her hand from his arm. "Because the board should probably know that our CEO is engaged to a coffee shop owner with a secret kid. Imagine the headlines."
Lila didn’t blink.
"Actually," Lila said. "Let’s talk headlines."
She pulled out her phone. "Should I tell them about the email where you said Cross Enterprises 'doesn’t partner with small businesses like mine'? Or about how you tried to shut down my contract 3 times?"
She didn’t have the emails.
But Evelyn didn’t know that.
Evelyn went pale. "You’re making that up."
"Am I?" Lila tilted her head. "We can ask legal to check."
Damian was staring at her now. Surprised. Maybe proud.
"Leo," Lila said, taking his hand. "Let’s go see Daddy’s office."
She walked past Evelyn without touching her.
Inside the office, the door shut.
Leo ran to the windows. "Wow!"
Lila turned to Damian. Her hands were shaking behind her back.
"Explain."
Damian exhaled. "Evelyn was my assistant years ago. My father pushed us together. I refused."
"Then why is she your date tonight?"
"Because Grandma set it up to test me," Damian said, frustrated. "She doesn’t know about you. About us."
"The contract us?" Lila asked.
Damian grabbed her wrist. Gently. "Stop saying that."
"Why? That’s what we signed. Three months. Money for Leo’s school. Fake engagement."
"Is that what you think this is?"
Lila pulled away. "What else is it, Damian? You have her. She fits. She wears red and knows which fork to use at galas."
"She doesn’t fit," Damian said quietly. "You do. Even when you’re causing chaos in my lobby."
Lila laughed, sharp. "Good. Because I’m done hiding."
She moved to Leo. "Come on, baby."
"Lila, wait."
At the door she paused. "You want a fiancée? Then act like it. Publicly. In front of her. In front of everyone."
"Or what?"
"Or I make my own moves," Lila said. "And I’m very good at business when I’m mad."
She walked out.
Evelyn was still standing there.
Lila stopped in front of her. "Have fun at the gala," she said sweetly. "I’ll be at the press conference tomorrow. As Mr. Cross’s fiancée."
She left before Evelyn could answer.
In the elevator, Leo tugged her sleeve. "Mommy, are you okay?"
Lila knelt and hugged him. "I’m better than okay, baby. Mommy’s done being scared."
Her phone buzzed.
`Maya: REPORT.`
Lila typed:
`I started trouble.`
`Maya: Proud of you. Wine at The Spot tonight.`
The doors closed.

*THE SPOT - 8:00 PM*
Just them. Wine. Empty mugs.
Maya poured Lila another glass. "So?"
Lila told her everything. Evelyn. The gala. The threat. The way Damian looked at her like she’d lost her mind.
Maya listened, then grinned. "So what’s the plan?"
Lila swirled her wine. "The plan is I stop running."
"And?"
"And I make him choose," Lila said. "Her. Or me. Or nothing."
Maya clinked her glass against Lila’s. "To starting trouble."
"To starting trouble," Lila echoed.
Outside, Cross Tower glowed against the night sky.
The war had begun.
