I drive until 7am. I know being 5 hours away from the pack house is a good distance. It’s a human town so I highly doubt that wolves would venture this far out, and they wouldn’t have much need to come here. It’s a small town called Godding town, it has the essentials, a primary school, a post office, a small shop and a laundromat… oh and a small pub called the Breakers inn.
After having a little walk around the town I enter the post office and I’m greeted by an older lady, who I soon learn is called Sally, I ask her a few questions about the town and then I ask about empty properties, I explain that I need no less than two bedrooms and I would need to move in that day. She chuckles slightly and says “blimey child, someone is watching over you, the tenant in the flat right above here left last week, it’s a two bedroom property, needs a bit of decorating mind, but it’s solid”
I accept it straight away without even viewing it. She explains that the landlord is also the owner of the pub, his name is Zak. He’s who I need to talk too. She takes me over to the pub and I’m greeted by a tall blonde American guy cleaning glasses behind the bar, he’s not much older than me. I ask to speak with his dad, Zak.
He smirks and says, my dad, Zak isn’t around right now, but I can help you. And that’s when I realise… he’s a bloody wolf! He must of realised as soon as I entered by the look on his face, neither of us approach the topic. I hand him my phone number and ask if he could get his dad to call me as soon as possible and turn and leave. As soon as I step outside the old stone brick pub my phone starts to vibrate and the number on the screen is one I don’t have saved. I hesitate to answer incase it’s one of Marks soldiers trying to track my phone, but I risk it anyway, that’s when I hear the American voice and they state “Zak’s available to talk to you now”
I turn and walk back in the pub slightly confused… “that was quick” I think to myself and as I enter stood behind the bar is the blonde guy grinning like a Cheshire cat. I look around confused and that’s when He puts out his hand and says “Hello gorgeous, I’m Zak.”
I freeze. I’m so confused, I look around and laugh “you’re telling me you own not only this pub, but properties too?”
“Yeah, why you so surprised” he says slight offended
“I mean you must be what? 20?” I ask
“No, I’m actually 22” he chuckles and then presents me with a tenancy contract.
He explains that I need to pay two months upfront and then from then on it’s £700 per month.
I sign my name straight away.
“Good doing business with you gorgeous” he replied cheekily. I smile, I’m kind of flattered. I pull out the wad of cash and place 4 months rent upfront… now it’s his turn to be surprised. I won’t tell him it’s courtesy of daddy!
I spend the rest of the day settling into the flat, sally was right it does need some decorating, but as flats go it’s pretty cozy, and I can see me and the baby being very happy here.
*4 months later*
As I roll my 6 month pregnant self out of bed, i plod to the kitchen for a glass of water. I’m huge, I look about 9 months… this bump cannot get any bigger I think. It’s 4am and also Christmas Day. I knew that today was the day I text Mark and dad to let them know I’m okay like I promised myself, after a week of constant hounding Mark finally gave up trying to contact me, his mate Beth had even attempted to make contact, but I knew to be truly happy and free I had to cut all ties. Even Amy. And I haven’t heard from them since.
I picked up my phone and started typing-
Merry Christmas to you all, I hope you have a lovely day.
I am safe and well. I will text you soon.
Stay safe, love,
Riley. X
I press send, I do feel slightly sad, Christmas was always such a fun time of year in the pack house. Loads of games and exchanging of gifts, this year it was just me and my maternity pyjamas.
Zak had become somewhat of a friend over the last few months, we knew we were both werewolves but we never brought it up, it was our little secret, he came over for a takeaway once a week and on Saturdays I helped at the pub. A lot of the regulars joked that we were secretly together and Zak was the baby’s father, to be fair I think Zak was just as excited as me. He attended my 20 week scan with me, along with sally who had become peanuts surrogate nan, and between them both they were so excited. It was nice. It made me feel like part of a family.
The baby was due on the 3rd June and I chose to keep the gender a surprise. I love all the unisex colours anyway, and me and Zak had painted little peanuts bedroom a soft yellow colour with rainbows on each wall.
Come to think of it… Zak was a bit like this babies father. I just had no feelings other than friendship for him, I guess James still owned my heart.
Whilst my mind is running away with itself I don’t even realise Mark has replied
Riley, where are you, this is getting silly now. Come home. Everyone is worried about you, me and James can come and collect you today, no matter how far, please Ri, come home.
I was not expecting a reply like that and definitely not at 4am, it’s caught me completely off guard and now I’m hysterically sobbing! Just the mention of James’ name was enough to set me off, but to see how concerned Mark was really touched me. For a split second my mind tells me maybe I should go home, and then I look down at my bulging belly and realise that’s not an option. I rub my belly and whisper “it’s just you and me peanut.”
I place my phone down and try to go back to sleep… “f**k Christmas” I say.
