Chapter 6 — Whispers and Alliances
The morning sun streamed through the sleek glass walls of Blackwell Industries, but the atmosphere inside was anything but bright. Whispers followed Amelia down the corridors, sharp glances darting from every corner. Even employees who had been polite before now avoided eye contact or, worse, smirked behind her back.
Amelia kept her composure, though her stomach churned. Each passing comment—murmurs about her intentions, her place in Chris’s life—felt like tiny daggers.
She rounded a corner and almost collided with Vanessa, one of Chris’s trusted managers. Vanessa’s lips pressed into a tight line, her posture stiff. “Morning, Amelia,” she said, her tone neutral but distant.
“Morning,” Amelia replied softly.
Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward the office doors where Chris was already waiting for his morning briefings. “You handled yesterday… impressively,” she said finally. “But you need to be careful. Some people here… they’re not on your side.”
Amelia nodded, grateful for the quiet warning. “I’ll be careful.”
Meanwhile, Chris’s office buzzed with quiet tension. Evan was briefing him on the latest social media analytics. “Engagement is skyrocketing,” he said, tapping the tablet. “Not in a good way. People are divided—some supporting Amelia, some against her.”
Chris’s jaw tightened. “And internally?”
“Mixed,” Evan admitted. “Some employees are jealous—others are trying to curry favor with Bianca. We need to act fast.”
Chris didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he ran a hand through his dark hair and stared out the window. Amelia’s presence in the company had always been a point of contention for some, but now, after the scandal, the subtle undercurrents of jealousy had turned into full-blown tension.
Amelia entered quietly. “Chris… maybe I should stay out of the office for a few days,” she suggested, concern in her voice.
Chris turned, sharp and certain. “No. You’re not hiding. You’re part of my life—and this company now. If anyone thinks they can intimidate you, they’ll have to go through me first.”
Amelia swallowed, admiration mixed with apprehension. “I don’t want to make things worse.”
“You won’t,” he said, stepping closer. “I’ll handle the problem. But you… just stay yourself.”
The day progressed with a tense undercurrent. Meetings that had once run smoothly were now punctuated with thinly veiled snide remarks and quiet glances. Amelia felt the weight of each whisper, but Chris’s presence beside her in the office gave her courage.
By mid-afternoon, Chris called for a private meeting with key department heads. Amelia watched as employees filed into the sleek conference room, tension so thick it could almost be cut with a knife. Chris’s commanding presence silenced murmurs almost instantly.
“I’ve heard the rumors,” he began, voice cold, precise. “And let me make this clear: Amelia Hart is not here for personal gain. She is here because she is competent, intelligent, and chosen by me. Anyone who spreads lies or attempts to undermine her will be held accountable. Consider this your first and final warning.”
A few heads nodded, others shifted uncomfortably, but the message was clear: Chris’s protection wasn’t just words—it was action.
After the meeting, Evan pulled Amelia aside. “Some of the employees will try to test your limits. Watch carefully who stays loyal and who doesn’t.”
Amelia nodded, feeling the heavy reality of her situation. “It’s going to be a long battle,” she said quietly.
Chris’s hand brushed hers for a fleeting moment as he passed. “We’ll face it together,” he said softly, a promise that warmed her more than the sun ever could.
But even as she felt his reassurance, Amelia couldn’t shake the feeling that Bianca’s interference was just the beginning—and that jealousy lurking in the shadows of the company could spark dangers neither of them had anticipated.
Outside, the city pulsed with life, oblivious to the silent wars being waged within the walls of Blackwell Industries. And Amelia realized that surviving this wouldn’t just take courage—it would take trust, strategy, and a bond stronger than any rumor or rivalry.
