Chapter 4 — Fire in the Shadows The news spread like wildfire. By noon, every major business blog, gossip page, and social media feed was filled with Amelia’s name. Some posts accused her of chasing Chris for wealth. Others claimed she trapped him into marriage. Screens across the company lit up with cruel comments. Amelia kept her hands folded tightly in her lap as Evan closed the blinds in Chris’s office. “It’s getting worse,” Evan said, scrolling through the tablet. “We need to respond quickly.” Chris stood with his back to them, staring out the window. His jaw was so tense Amelia thought it might c***k. “Chris…” she whispered. He didn’t turn. When he finally spoke, his voice was calm. Too calm. “Evan, prepare a public statement.” Evan nodded. “What should it say?” Chris turned then—eyes blazing with controlled fury. “That the rumors are false. That Amelia is my chosen partner. And that anyone attacking her will face legal consequences.” Amelia’s breath caught. “Chris, you don’t have to defend me publicly,” she said softly. “It’ll only make things worse.” He stepped closer. “I won’t let anyone drag your name through the mud,” he said. “Not again.” “Again…?” Amelia asked, confused. Chris froze, realizing he had said something he didn’t mean to. But before she could press him, Evan cleared his throat. “There’s… something else.” He placed his phone on the desk. A recorded voice message played. Bianca. “Chris will never choose her. She’s nothing. I’ll ruin her so badly that the board will beg him to end the engagement.” Amelia’s heart dropped. “She hates me that much?” she whispered. Chris’s eyes darkened. “She’s crossed the line.” The Confrontation Chris walked out of the office with long, angry strides. Evan followed. Amelia rushed after them, struggling to keep up. They entered one of the executive lounges—and Bianca was there, sipping coffee like she owned the place. Her smile faded when she saw Chris’s face. “Oh. You found the article?” she asked innocently. Chris didn’t blink. “Bianca. You posted lies about my fiancée.” She scoff
