Caleb
I watched her sleep. She looked peaceful now, and I felt relieved knowing she had finally woken up. After everything that happened at the mall, seeing her awake was enough to calm some of the worry in my chest.
But now I needed to get to the bottom of this.
I picked up my phone and called Elise.
“Hello, Caleb?”
“I need you to come to the hospital.”
“Is Jane okay?”
“She’s fine. She’s sleeping again. I need you to stay with her while I go out.”
“Where are you going?”
“I have something to handle.”
There was a short silence.
“Okay. I’ll come.”
“Thanks.”
I ended the call.
It didn’t take long before Elise arrived. I explained that I wouldn’t be gone for long and asked her to stay with Jane until I returned.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “I’ll stay with her.”
I nodded.
“Thank you.”
I took one last look at Jane before leaving the room.
I got into my car and drove straight to the torture room.
When I walked in, Marcus and two of my men were already there.
The man we’d captured at the mall was tied to a chair. He looked terrible. His face was covered in cuts and dried blood, and his breathing was heavy.
Marcus had clearly made sure he understood that we weren’t there to play games.
I walked closer.
“Leave us.”
Marcus looked at me.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
He nodded and walked out with the others.
I stood in front of the man.
“Who is behind this?”
He stared at me and said nothing.
“I asked you a question.”
“I won’t answer.”
I studied his face for a moment.
“You may think Viktor cares about you, but you’re wrong. You’re just one of many men working for him. If you disappear, he’ll replace you.”
He looked away.
“I could let you live,” I continued, “if you give me the information I need.”
He laughed weakly.
“You already know I work for Viktor.”
“Keep going.”
“Just give him the girl.”
My expression hardened.
“And why would I?”
“Someone paid him a lot of money for her. He can’t repay the money, so he needs to deliver her to that person.”
I stared at him.
“Who is this person?”
He looked at me for a few seconds before giving a small, almost mocking smile.
“Do you really want to know?”
“Tell me.”
“Your father.”
For a moment, I didn’t move.
“My father?”
He nodded.
“He works with Viktor. With everything that has happened, he must have confronted Viktor by now. And when he does, he’ll know that Jane is his missing package.”
My stomach turned.
A package.
That’s what my father called her?
My hands tightened into fists.
“You’re lying.”
“Why would I lie?”
He leaned back against the chair, wincing from the pain.
“You should never have involved yourself.”
I stepped closer.
“This is a big battle. A lot of powerful men are involved in this. You think you can protect that girl forever?”
I grabbed the front of his shirt.
“What did you call her?”
He swallowed.
“The girl will be taken. No matter what you do.”
I released him and stepped back.
My mind was racing.
My father had been involved in the organ trafficking. I’d already suspected that much after overhearing him in his study.
But this was different.
Jane wasn’t just caught in the middle of some random operation.
My father had paid for her.
And Viktor was supposed to deliver her to him.
I walked out of the room without saying another word.
Marcus was waiting outside.
“What happened?”
I looked at him.
“My father.”
Marcus’s expression changed.
“What about him?”
“He’s behind this.”
He stared at me.
“Are you sure?”
“The man said my father paid Viktor for Jane.”
Marcus was silent.
I ran a hand through my hair.
“I need to speak to him.”
“Caleb—”
“Now.”
I walked toward the exit.
There was something about my father that I had always known.
He was ruthless. Cold. Capable of doing things most men wouldn’t even think about.
But I never imagined he would see a human being as nothing more than something he could buy and collect.
And now Jane was in the middle of it.
I didn’t know why, but knowing the kind of man my father was only made me more determined to protect her.
He wasn’t getting her.
Not while I was still alive.
