Where am I?

Jane I opened my eyes slowly. Everything was blurry, almost like I was looking through a fog. I could barely see anything clearly, but I felt a warmth around my hand. Then the sharp pain in my shoulder reminded me that I wasn’t dreaming. It was Caleb. I turned my head slightly and saw him sitting beside my bed, his hand holding mine. He looked tired, like he had been there for a while. I guess he stayed all night. He’s really a gentleman sometimes. A small smile appeared on my face at the thought. Other times, he could be such a handful. My smile faded when I remembered what happened at the mall. Elise. I remembered the gunshots, everyone screaming and running. Elise was so scared, and without thinking, I pushed her out of the way. Then I felt the pain in my shoulder. Oh my God. I got shot. That was where everything went blank because I couldn’t remember anything after that. I tried to raise myself from the bed, but the moment I moved, pain shot through my shoulder and my head started hurting. I winced. Caleb immediately moved. “Jane?” His voice sounded worried. I looked at him. “You’re awake.” I nodded slowly. “Where am I?” “The hospital.” I looked around the room. It was quiet, clean and bright. I could hear the soft beeping of a machine beside me. “How long have I been here?” “Since yesterday.” My eyes widened slightly. “Yesterday?” He nodded. I looked at our hands and realized he was still holding mine. He noticed it too and slowly let go. “How’s Elise?” I asked. “She’s fine.” I sighed in relief. “Thank God.” Caleb stared at me for a few seconds. “What?” “You got shot because of her.” “I know.” “You could have died.” I looked away. “But I didn’t.” “That isn’t the point.” His voice was slightly harder now. I looked back at him. “I couldn’t just watch her get shot.” He didn’t say anything. I could see the frustration on his face. “You scared everyone yesterday,” he finally said. “Everyone?” “Yes.” I raised an eyebrow. “Did I scare you?” He looked at me for a moment. “Yes.” My heart skipped. I quickly looked away, pretending to adjust the blanket. “Oh.” The room became quiet. I didn’t know what to say after that. Caleb stood up and walked toward the window. “Does your shoulder hurt?” “A little.” “A little?” I looked at him. “Okay, a lot.” He shook his head. “You’re unbelievable.” I smiled slightly. “I’m still alive.” He turned around and looked at me. “Don’t joke about that.” His expression was serious. I nodded. “Okay.” Before either of us could say anything else, the door opened. Elise walked in. The moment she saw me awake, her face lit up. “Jane!” She hurried toward me, then stopped herself when she remembered my shoulder. “You’re awake!” I smiled. “Hi.” She carefully hugged me from the side. “I was so scared.” “I’m okay.” “You saved my life.” I shook my head. “Anyone would have done the same.” Elise pulled back and looked at me like I had just said something ridiculous. “I wouldn’t.” I laughed softly. “You’re crazy.” She smiled. “I knew I liked you for a reason.” Caleb cleared his throat. Elise looked at him. “What?” “Give her some space.” “She just woke up.” Elise rolled her eyes. “You’re always so serious.” I couldn’t help laughing. For the first time since I woke up, I felt a little relaxed. Then the door opened again. A nurse walked in with a tray of medication. She checked my pulse and then looked at Caleb. “She needs to rest. No stress and no unnecessary movement.” Caleb nodded. “I understand.” The nurse handed me some medicine and water. After taking it, I leaned back against the pillow. My eyes were already becoming heavy again. Before I closed them, I looked at Caleb. He was watching me. And for some reason, I found myself wondering just how long he had been sitting beside my bed, holding my hand while I slept.
