His silence

Jane The moment we stepped through the doors of the mansion, I knew I had entered another world. Everything around me looked expensive. The marble floor beneath my feet gleamed beneath the massive chandelier hanging above us. Elegant paintings covered the walls, and the furniture looked like it had been carefully selected to make the entire place feel grand. It was beautiful. I stayed close to Caleb as we followed his father through the entrance. His hand rested lightly against my back, and I wasn’t sure whether it was part of the act or simply meant to guide me. Probably both. His father stopped at the foot of the staircase. “Your room is upstairs.” Caleb nodded. His father looked at him for a moment before his gaze shifted briefly to me. “Dinner will be served later.” Then he turned and walked away. Caleb watched him disappear before looking at me. “Come.” We climbed the stairs. I kept glancing around, taking in the beautiful paintings and the long hallway lined with doors. Eventually, Caleb stopped in front of one and opened it. I stepped inside. My eyes immediately widened. The room was enormous. A large bed sat in the centre, covered with soft white sheets and several pillows. Tall windows overlooked the gardens, while a couch and two chairs occupied a corner of the room. I slowly turned around. “The room is beautiful” My gaze returned to the bed. Then to Caleb. “We’re sharing a room?” “Yes.” I stared at him. “And that means we’re sharing the bed?” His expression remained calm. “We’re supposed to look like we’re together remember?.”he asked calmly I shook my head. “Pretending to be your woman doesn’t mean I have to sleep in the same bed as you.” He glanced toward the couch. “I’ll sleep there.” I frowned. “No. I’ll sleep there.” “Jane.” “I mean it.” He looked at me for a moment. “You’re not sleeping on the couch.” “Why not?” “Because you’re the lady.” “And where will you sleep?” “The couch.” I stared at him. “You aren’t serious” “Yes.” I opened my mouth to argue again, but before I could, a knock sounded at the door. Caleb turned. “Come in.” The door opened, and Marcus stood there. “Sorry to interrupt.” Caleb’s expression changed immediately. “What is it?” “We need to talk.” Caleb nodded. He looked at me. “Stay here.” I nodded. He stepped into the hallway with Marcus, and the door closed behind them. I stood there for a moment. Then I looked around the room again. It was strange. Just a few days ago, I had been living an ordinary life. Now I was in a mansion belonging to a man I barely knew, pretending to be his woman while people I had never met were apparently trying to kill me. I sat on the edge of the bed. My mind wandered back to Caleb’s words. I’ve known who you are for a very long time. I still didn’t understand what he meant. And I really wanted to. ⸻ Hours passed. Caleb never returned. At first, I stayed in the room like he had instructed. But eventually, the silence became unbearable. I stood and walked toward the door. I hesitated before opening it. He had told me to stay in the room. But I wasn’t trapped. At least, I didn’t want to feel like I was. I stepped into the hallway. The mansion was quiet. I slowly walked downstairs, taking my time to admire everything. There were large portraits hanging along the walls, decorative vases placed on small tables, and beautiful flowers arranged everywhere. I heard footsteps behind me. I turned. Two maids were walking toward me with folded clothes in their arms. They smiled when they noticed me. “Good evening, miss.” “Good evening.” “Are you looking for something?” One of them asked. “No. I was just looking around.” “Okay ma.” They continued on their way. I smiled to myself and walked farther into the sitting room. A woman standing near the window turned when she heard me. She was beautiful, with long dark hair and a graceful appearance. She smiled. “You must be Jane.” I nodded. “Yes.” She walked toward me. “I’m Caleb’s sister.” “Oh.” I smiled politely. “It’s nice to meet you.” “Nice to meet you too.” She looked at me curiously. “You are very beautiful .” I wasn’t sure what to say, so I simply said “Thank you” Before the conversation could continue, a male voice came from behind me. “Well, this is interesting.” I turned. And for a moment, I forgot what I was going to say. He was incredibly handsome. Tall, well built, with dark hair, sharp features and an effortless confidence that made him stand out immediately. His eyes settled on me. A slow smile appeared on his face. “I don’t believe we’ve met.” “No,” I said. He extended his hand. “Rave.” I took it. “Jane.” His gaze lingered on mine. “Jane.” Something about the way he repeated my name made me smile. “Nice to meet you.” “The pleasure is mine.” His sister gave him a look. “Don’t start.” Rave looked at her innocently. “Start what?” “You know exactly what.” He chuckled. I couldn’t help laughing. There was something easy about him. Unlike Caleb, who always seemed to think before he spoke, Rave was relaxed and effortlessly charming. “So,” he said, turning his attention back to me, “how long have you been with my brother?” I hesitated. “Not very long.” “Really?” I nodded. He smiled. “Interesting.” I laughed softly. Rave smiled. “You’re funny.” “I didn’t say anything funny.” “You made me laugh.” His sister watched us with an amused expression. Rave leaned casually against the edge of a chair. He had an easy way of keeping the conversation going. Every time I thought it was about to end, he’d say something that made me laugh again. For the first time since I had been kidnapped, I felt normal. I wasn’t thinking about the men who had taken me. I wasn’t even thinking about the fact that I was sitting inside a dangerous man’s family mansion. I was simply enjoying a conversation. A maid eventually approached us. “Excuse me.” We turned. “Dinner will be ready in few minutes .” Rave nodded. “Thank you.” The maid left. I glanced down at myself. “I should probably go get ready.” Rave looked at me. “Already?” I smiled. “Dinner.” “Right.” He smiled. “I’ll see you downstairs.” “Of course.” I turned toward the stairs. “Jane.” I looked back. Rave was still smiling. “It was nice talking to you.” I smiled. “You too.” I walked upstairs. I was still smiling as I reached the top. But the smile disappeared when I saw Caleb standing outside our room. He was holding his jacket. His eyes immediately settled on me. Then his gaze moved toward the staircase behind me. “Where were you?” “Downstairs.” His jaw tightened. “I told you to stay in the room.” I swallowed. “I know. I only wanted to look around.” “You disobeyed me.” His voice was low. “I wasn’t doing anything wrong.” “You were told to stay in the room.” I lowered my eyes. “I’m sorry.” Silence. I looked up at him. He didn’t say anything. He simply slipped on his jacket. “Caleb?” Nothing. He walked past me. I turned. “Are you angry with me ?” He didn’t answer. “It’s almost dinner time “ He continued down the stairs. I stood there watching him leave. He was giving me the silent treatment. I didn’t understand why his silence bothered me so much. Maybe because, despite everything, I was beginning to care about what Caleb thought of me. I looked down the staircase. Then I heard Rave’s laughter coming from downstairs. And somehow, I had a feeling dinner was going to be far more complicated than I expected..
