“What’s wrong with me?!” I shrieked at the doctor, whilst staring at my protruding stomach. I couldn’t believe this and in fact, if I hadn’t known better, I would’ve said that the doctor was playing pranks on me.
To further find out if this wasn’t just a fragment of my imagination, I slipped my hands into the duvet covering my naked body and pressed down on my stomach and winced when I was suddenly attacked with a sharp abdominal pain.
“I am really pregnant?!” I gasped. “How’s all these even possible? Where am I? What time is it?!” I rushed out, feeling suddenly overwhelmed.
“I do not know how to answer all your questions, but I am certain that you’re seven months gone Madame,” He answered, making me gap in shock.
I looked up at him in shock, half expecting him to call all these bluffs but he didn’t, instead he dropped a test result onto my lap and I didn’t bother to check through it to know that it was mine; I gulped.
This couldn’t be possible!
Wasn’t it just yesterday that I had caught Michael, my fiancé… or ex fiancé now, in bed with some brunette that I had never seen in my life?
How then was I not pregnant yesterday but is suddenly pregnant today? Something was definitely wrong!
I noticed how the doctor who had once been standing at a corner of the room stared at me as if I was an alien for a while and then slowly walked up to me with a black file in his hands.
“Miss…?” He trailed off, expecting me to continue as he didn’t know what my name was and I eagerly continued because I was in desperate need of answers.
“Stevens.” I said.
“Miss Stevens… you were involved in an accident some hours ago and from the tests my team and I carried out on you, it’s been ascertained that you’re suffering from partial amnesia.” He continued, staring pointedly at me as if daring me to talk. I did.
“It's not possible that I have amnesia! The heck, I can even remember my name and what I did yesterday!” I argued with him but he only shook his head at me, infuriating me even further.
“What was yesterday’s date then?” He asked and I first had to roll my eyes before answering;
“Thirty first of March, twenty-twenty.”
The doctor looked at me for a long while, shook his head at me and then turned his phone’s screen to my line of vision. Again, I gasped when I saw that it was the sixth of January, twenty-twenty one.
“Doctor what’s happening?! Was I in a coma? How?!” I shrieked fearfully. This was too much to bear! Too much to take in all at once.
I couldn’t believe that a whole nine months of my life had been wiped out of my head like some unwanted file. The thought made me cringe and at the same time, made me begin to feel jittery.
It was obvious that something was missing. I could feel it deep down that a chapter of my life was being suppressed, a chapter that held some of the most fascinating moments of my life.
“Like I said earlier, Madam, you have partial amnesia also known as selective amnesia. I feel like your body is trying to forget things that have happened in that fifteen months and is fighting hard against it.” He explained but I could only stare at him in confusion as all he was saying sounded like absolute gibberish to me.
“…it’s your body’s way of going through shock.” He finished but I still didn’t want to say a word. Tears sprung into my eyes but I refused to allow them to drop. I was no Barbie to cry at every slight inconvenience!
All I was concerned about was this pregnancy that I had no idea about and to think that being heavily pregnant only made it even worse.
Where do I start from?
My head throbbed as many thoughts floated through my mind and I couldn’t help but to begin to ask myself some certain questions.
Did Michael and I get married even after I had seen him cheating on me?
Was this pregnancy his or belonged to a totally different individual? One that I cannot even remember right now? God! I needed answers.
All these thoughts only made it more difficult for me to think straight and I screamed in frustration as I could already begin to feel a build up of stress on my temples.
“Madame are you okay?“ I heard the doctor ask and I immediately shook my head in negation.
I wasn’t okay at all and there was no way I was going to try to fake being alright when my entire life was literally crashing right in front of my eyes at the moment.
I buried my face in my hands and sobbed uncontrollably for a few minutes as that was all I could do in this confusing situation. I only stopped when I felt an arm draped around me and instinctively knew that it was the doctor’s.
“If you have any family members you can remember their contact details, please do not hesitate to tell us… your bills are building up.” The doctor said suddenly, making me gasp as the realization that I couldn’t let my family see me like this struck me.
It was impossible! Who would I tell them was responsible for this pregnancy?
“Doctor, please I need a favor from you,” I croaked out desperately, whilst clinging onto his arm like I was clinging for dear life.
“What is that Madam?”
“Please, I want you to help me terminate this pregnancy!” I cried desperately. “I have no idea who the father is and cannot face my family like this… please.”
“You’re seven months gone Ma’am and way out of the safe period for an abortion, I can’t do that.” He tried to reason with me but I shook my head. It was my life and if I had to die because of it, then it was my cross!
“Please, I beg you in the name of whatever you worship! Do this one thing for me…” I cried, trailing off when a sob wracked my chest.
I noticed the forlorn look in his eyes when he picked me up by my arm and then helped me to a chair close by. From his countenance, I already knew that he would do it and so I didn’t bother to try to beg him anymore.
“I will do the operation.” He said, making me smile. “But on the condition that whatever happens… you’ll take responsibility for it.” He said and I quickly nodded.
That wasn’t a big deal!
I quickly laid back in bed, expecting him to start with it already but instead, he thrusted a piece of paper into my hands.
Quickly, I glanced through the document and frowned when I discovered that it was a written agreement on what he had just said about me taking responsibility. Without thinking, I provided my name, signed them quickly and returned it back to him before laying back down.
At this point, I didn’t care about anything else besides getting myself out of here and getting rid of this problem too.
“Now that we’re fine with that, help me get this thing out of me!” I hissed and he hurriedly went to do my bidding.
Just as the doctor stood up to go get something outside, the door was suddenly pushed open and three hefty men stepped into the room looking as though they owned the place.
“What the hell are you trying to do to my wife?” The tallest of the trio snarled, making my mouth fall open in shock. Who the heck was his wife?!
