Three days had passed since the call from the hospital and Leah divided her time between her apartment, the office, and her mother’s bedside at Northwestern. She would arrive at work before seven in the morning and leave by two in the afternoon for the hospital, only to return home at eight in the evening to finish the sketches for the thirty-fifth floor. It was a life that didn’t feel like living, but it succeeded in keeping her busy enough to avoid thinking about the cryptic messages, the shadow that watched her, or the way Adam had placed that cup of coffee in front of her without asking a single question. On the night following the hospital visit she had considered telling him or thanking him, but every time she approached his corner office she found herself hesitating because thanking him for not asking felt ridiculous even in her own head. So she did nothing and settled for observing him from afar as he moved in and out of meetings or spoke on the phone in low tones, occasionally looking in her direction without their eyes ever meeting which felt like a safe and necessary distance.
Thursday morning was cold even by Chicago standards and Leah arrived at the office with her usual black coffee in hand while thinking about the final details of the thirty-fifth-floor project which was nearly complete. Tomorrow was the deadline and she felt a sense of satisfaction with the work until she opened the door to her workspace and found Mia waiting there. Mia informed her that Mr. Blackwell requested her presence at a ten o'clock meeting regarding a new project where Claire Harrington would be attending. Leah felt a strange sensation creeping into her chest that wasn't exactly anger or fear but something quieter and far more unsettling, yet she thanked Mia and promised to be there.
The meeting took place in the same room with the same glass table and the same gray river flowing beneath the window, but the atmosphere was entirely different this time. Claire Harrington was seated near the head of the table with her blonde hair draped over her shoulders and an elegant blue suit, looking confident as she chatted quietly with Adam. When Leah entered Claire’s smile widened with a warmth that felt friendly but her eyes said something else entirely, a silent reminder that she was still there. Claire mentioned that the new project involved a massive contract for a residential complex in the northern suburbs and that her firm would be responsible for the facades and public spaces. Adam looked up from his papers and added that their internal team would handle the supervision and coordination which was why Leah was called in.
For an entire hour Claire presented her initial vision with sketches and 3D renderings that showcased her undeniable talent and professionalism. Leah however wasn't truly listening but was instead watching how Claire leaned toward Adam to explain key points and how she placed her hand on the table near his without touching it. Claire’s gaze suggested a long-standing intimacy and Leah felt a tightening in her chest that she couldn't quite justify since Adam Blackwell was just a cold and mysterious businessman. Yet in the middle of Claire’s explanation Leah’s eyes met Adam’s for a fleeting second and she saw something there, a flash that seemed to tell her that what she was thinking wasn't true before he returned to his papers as if nothing had happened.
After the meeting Claire stopped Leah by the elevator to offer a piece of advice, smiling as she noted that Adam doesn't choose with his heart. Leah didn't comment but the words echoed in her mind as the elevator doors closed on Claire’s triumphant expression. An hour later the entire team gathered in the open workspace as Rebecca announced that Adam wanted the final designs for the thirty-fifth floor a day early. Leah was ready and as she began her presentation Adam emerged from the elevator with Claire following behind. Leah took a deep breath and explained the concept of the movable glass units that allowed the space to transition from private offices to open halls in minutes, emphasizing the energy efficiency and cost savings without sacrificing beauty.
When she finished the room fell silent until Adam stood up and declared that this design would be the one implemented. He announced that Leah would be in full charge of the thirty-fifth floor and Claire offered a frozen smile of congratulations before leaving the room. Rebecca looked at Leah with a new sense of respect while Adam leaned in and whispered to Leah that she deserved this because she was the best, not because someone chose her. As Leah packed her bags later that evening she encountered Claire again in the hallway who reiterated that Adam only chooses what serves him and that everyone else is merely a tool. Leah was left standing there as the distance between her and Adam’s office felt simultaneously further and closer than it had ever been.
That night at the hospital while her mother slept Leah opened her phone to find a new message from the unknown number that read "Do not believe Claire" which left her staring at the screen in confusion. She looked back at the previous warnings and the reassurance about her mother and wondered who could possibly know these intimate details and why they wanted her to stay. On the other side of the city Adam sat in his dark office looking at the old photograph of his mother and remembering how fear and pain felt. He believed the only way to stay safe was to maintain a distance that no one could cross, forgetting that some distances are created specifically to be bridged.
